Page 143 of Hearing her Cries

There was a gulp or a hiccup. The sounds of a kid crying."Uh-huh. Sheriff Lake. You work with my mommy, right?"

Zoey was not this kid's mother. But he wasn’t going to argue with this kid right now. Not with Zoey missing. "Yes. I do."

"Grandfather has my mommy now. In hisdownstairs. I think he's going to hurt her next. Like he did the other ladies. I think he’s going to killed her, too."

Murdoch’s blood chilled. Sick, solid ice.

"Sweetheart, are you at the place you sent the letter from?" That was at least forty-five minutes from where he was now. About an hour south of Value.

"Uh-huh. Please, can you hel—"

The call cut off. Murdoch cursed.

He had to get there now. But the Value sheriff’s post was closer to that damned address. He grabbed his phone and dialed the Value post. The dispatcher Verity answered.

He gave what he could. As fast as he could.

His next call was to Neil. "Sound the alarm. Zoey's been abducted. I'm heading to where I think she is now. Get whoever you can to meet me there. Call out the damned choppers from Finley Creek if you have to." He gave the address and more instructions. Neil was damned good at his job; he’d do what Murdoch needed. “Call them out of Dallas, wherever the hell you can get them.”

He just hoped it would be in time.

Zoey could have been missing forhours.Murdoch hadn’t been there. He hadn’t been there to stop the woman he loved from being taken right out of her damned house.

Just like he hadn’t protected his sister.

He wasn’t going to fail Zoey again.

"I'll be there as soon as I can, but I'm at that domestic in Shadrach now. It's nothing. I'm on my way, Lake. Prost and I'll be there as fast as we can. I’m coming. Don’t do anything stupid!"

Shit. Shadrach was another little nowhere spot in their territory. It was twenty-five miles south of Garrity city limits. It would be ninety minutes until Neil could get there. At best.

Murdoch was already to his Tahoe before he disconnected.

She was out there, and she was in trouble, and he was going to where he thought she was. It would take him a good thirty-five at warp speed to get there.

That was thirty-five minutes too long.

He was ten minutes north of Garrity when Addy called.

Murdoch filled him in as quickly as he could. But Addy was off in the corner of his own region. Backup was going to be a good ninety minutes behind Murdoch. At best. From any direction.

Ninety minutes was too damned long.

Murdoch pressed the pedal to the floor.

Zoey fought the fog;somehow, she knew she was drugged. It wasn’t something she’d ever forget after waking in the hospital months ago. What she didn’t know was how. Or why. Definitely not where.

Zoey pulled on her wrists. One was secured. She couldn't move. It took her a moment to force her eyes open. To look around.

She was on a hospital bed. Her hand was held by gray duct tape.

The room she was in was old. Wooden paneling from the seventies was everywhere. This place and the Garrity Medical Clinic obviously shared the same decorator.

Something moved near her feet.

Zoey forced her eyes to focus. On the man. He was tall. Extremely so. The light was behind him.
