Being flawed was very, very scary. And very, verybad.

Being flawed made grandfather very, very, very mad sometimes.

Oakley tried really hard not to be flawed when Grandfather was there.

There were new papers on Grandfather’s desk this time.

She got really excited. New stuff was usually about her mommy. Oakley made sure to remember exactly where it was, so she could put it right back.

Sometimes Grandfather yelled at Nanny for messing with the stuff on his desk. Nanny would yell back and say she was just dusting and stuff. So Orion’s asthma wouldn’t be as bad.

Sometimes she didn’t think Nanny and Grandfather liked each other very much either.

She could read really well now. She sounded out the big letters in a whisper.

“KUR-tif-kait of Burf.” Oakley jumped up and down when she saw the next part.

There washername, right there. But not just Oakley. There were two more names. She didn’t knowshehad three names.

“Oakley Denita Dav-ee-ess.” Oakley Denita Daviess. Daviess looked like a really weird name.

It was in a box that hadLast Nameprinted in it in really small letters. She knew what a last name was. She wasn’t a baby, or anything.

Shehad a last name. Like onScraggle-Popps, there was Jilly Silly. And Milly Silly and Philly Silly. Silly was their last name.Scraggle-Poppssaid that all the time!

Daviess was probablyherlast name. Oakley Denita Daviess. That washer. She carefully lifted it, the paper.

There was one for Orion, too. Orion Gregory Daviess.

It had birthdays, too. Like the kids on TV had. She’d never had a birthday before, she didn’t think. She just knew almost how old she was because Grandfather had told the dentist one day when her tooth really hurted and Grandfather taken her to get it fixed before it got ’fected. He’d been so mad at her that day. She’d just stayed really, really quiet, even though the tooth doctor was really scary.

She took the papers to the copy thing. She knew how to use it. She just had to hit the big green button and then there was a bright light and a new picture came out. She’d figured it out a long time ago.

But…she didn’t ever look at the light. It made Oakley’s eyes water when she did that.

She made copies of the birth thingies for her special book she hid under her bed. Her bed had a hole in the fuzzy stuff on the bottom. She hid stuff there all the time.

She loved to look at her special book on the nights he was away.

Grandfather wouldneverfind it and take it away when she was bad like he had all her other favorite stuff.

This was one of the best days ever!

She had her name now. And her birthday.

The spot where her mommy’s name was supposed to be was empty.

But sheknew.

He had some stuff on his desk with her mommy’s picture, too. She knew.

She’d found the pictures a long, long time ago.

He’d put a name on the back of the picture.

And there was a newspaper with a cartoon garlic on the top. The garlic talked about her mommy sometimes, too.

The lady in the pictures justhadto be her mommy. If Oakley really did look like her mommy like Grandfather said.
