Shehadto do this.

Oakley knew she had to be brave.

She had to do the right thing.

She wasn't a baby. She could do it.

Oakley snuck down the hall toward the kitchen.

She'd probably get in trouble.

She just didn't care. She had to bebrave.

She'd seen mean Vaughn and his friends outside. They'd had ladies with them. Carrying them. And those ladies looked deaded.

Her mommy was here. Sheriff Lake was coming.

She had to find Orion and tell him everything would be ok soon. That Sheriff Lake was coming to help them and their mommy. And those other ladies.

If those ladies weren’t already deaded.

Sheriff Lake was a policeman.

Policemensavedpeople in trouble. It was theirjob.

Jilly Silly said the policemen and policewomen helped little kids in trouble.

She and her brother just had to stay in their rooms and wait.

Help was coming now. They would be ok. When Sheriff Lake got there to help them. They would be ok.

Sheriff Lake would help their mommy. No matter what.

She checked on Orion. He was sleeping. He had been sniffling earlier. And doing that wheezy sound he did when he couldn't breathe good.

That was when Grandfather always said he was flawed.

A disappointment.

Less than perfect.

Less than perfect was the worst thing tobe.

She covered her little brother up and tucked his favorite stuffed doll in his arms. It was Jilly Silly. Orion liked her red hair. It was made of red-yarn stuff. He liked to chew on it when he got scared.

That lady Mean Vaughn had carried had red hair, too. Oakley really hoped she wasn't deaded or anything.

Oakley wasn’t stupid.

The lady probably was deaded.

Oakleyhadto do this.

Before Grandfather killed her and Orion, too.

Shehadto take care of him. No matter what.

Oakley kissed him on his forehead.
