She left him there, then went downstairs. Nanny was sleeping now.

There was that phone thing on the wall. It wasn't a cell phone like Milly Silly had. The cell phone had stopped working when she called Sheriff Lake. It had a lightning on the screen. A red one.

This phone looked like the ones in history and stuff. With the weird twisty macaroni kind of cord.

She thought it was an antique. Antique meantreally old.

Like Grandfather. He wasantique.

Oakley carefully scooted the chair closer to the counter. She'd have to climb up there. But she could do it.

She was very, very good at climbing stuff. And very brave.

She remembered the numbers Jilly Silly had said to call in a ’mergency.

9-1-1. That was all.

She could do it.

Oakley stepped on the counter. And reached for the phone.

It made a real weird noise when she picked it up. The numbers were the clicky button kind.

She pressed them carefully. Then it did that ringing thingy.

"911. What is your emergency?"

"Please hurry. Grandfather is hurting them. I think he's going to kill them like he did the other ladies," Oakley whispered into the phone. Jilly Silly said you had to tell 911 peopleexactlywhat was happening. So they could help the right way. "The ladies in the basement."

"What is your name and age?"

"I am Oakley Daviess. And I am six years old."

"Oakley, please stay on the phone with me, ok? Who is being hurt right now?"

"The lady with the blue hair. And the lady with the red hair. Mean Vaughn brought them here in his bug van. They are in the downstairs with Grandfather now. Where he does the scary doctor stuff. For the ’xperiments. Please hurry—"

"You little shit! Get off that phone right now before I kill you!"

"Help! Hurry! He's going to kill us! Help us! Please! Hurry!"

The phone was yanked out of her hand and slammed down on the counter.

Oakley just cried. Tried to get away.

Nanny woke up. Oakley just cried even harder when Nanny yelled for the man to put Oakley down. To put her down right now.

Mean Vaughn had Oakley now.

She was going to be deaded!

"Who did you call?" He shook her hard. "Who? You are just as much trouble as your sisters, aren't you?"

Oakley nodded. She kicked, but he was too far away. "Yes! I am! I am willful! I called the policemen! They are going to make you go to jail for being bad! Let me go!" Oakley bit him on the hand. He dropped her. Oakley ran until she was back in her room. She hurried under her bed and into the back corner.

She slipped her special book out of its hiding place. Held it, until she felt less scared. She listened. But she didn't hear him.

He was going to tell Grandfather what she did.
