Well, maybe he did. The van used in an abduction attempt, a phone call from a kid inhisregion asking for immediate help for a dark-haired woman in danger, his favorite dark-haired nurse Bonita’s identification.

Zoey was missing.

The kid had said specifically that her mother, the mother she claimed was Zoey Daviess, was in that building.

That was exigent enough for the man who loved Zoey forever.

If he was screwing up here, he could kiss his career good-bye. Possibly even spend time in jail if the screw up was bad enough.

But hell, there wasn't anything he wouldn't do to save the woman he loved. He’d just ask for a pardon from the governor if he had to.

He’d trade his soul to find Zoey right now.

And with that bug van right there—already used once in an abduction attempt—he was damned certain Zoey was in there somewhere. The guys in that van had tried for her baby sister—it wasn't a huge jump to assume they'd come for her next. Or had looked for Pen at the house in Garrity—and found Zoey instead.

That was all the probable cause this man needed.

He crept to the end of the large porch. There was a back door right there and waiting for a man to walk in.

That was when he smelled the smoke.

Bonnie rolled to her side, pulling her knees to her stomach.

That monster had kneed her in the stomach at least twice. She knew what kind of damage that could have done. But she didn't have time to think. To worry about him coming back.

Bonnie could smell the smoke.

That other woman had screamed. Bonnie had heard at least one other woman here right now. Someone else was just as in trouble as she was.

It could be Crispin.

She pulled herself to her knees, somehow. She had to find that other woman.

It could be Crispin.

Even if it wasn’t, she wasn’t about to leave another woman trapped with thismonster.

That was all that she could think about as she forced herself to her feet, even though every inch of her hurt.

Far more than she ever had before.

He would have touched her. He had started to. He had wanted to. She’d seen it in his eyes.

Had known, the way he had been touching her.

There had been madness in his eyes. No denying that. Especially when he's said she was taking Denita's place in his heart.

Bonnie shivered.

Bonnie shoved those memories aside.

It was time to do what she had to do. To get out of here.

And find her baby girl. Her baby needed her.

Bonnie would get her baby back, and get back to the rest of her girls.
