He had just turned to leave his office for the final time when something caught his eye.
Movement.
Behind the damned vent.
Gregory bent over and yanked the vent free from where it snapped into place.
“What have you done? Where are they?”
She just cried and cried.
He pulled Oakley up and shook her slightly. “Where are the hard drives?”
“What are hard drives, Grandfather?” She trembled in his hands. “Something smells funny. I want Nanny.”
He hooked his arm around her waist and carried her out of his office. What was he going to do with her now? He didn’t want to be burdened with her now. For a moment he considered just locking her in a guest room and being done with her. Letting the fire have her. “You have been nothing but trouble. How am I going to dispose of you now?”

Oakley didn’t knowwhat to do. She could smell the smoke stuff. It was really bad. Like the time Nanny had burned marshmallow things and put them with chocolate stuff. It had smelled funny, but tasted really good.
This smell was lots and lots worse. It wasn’t good at all.
“Where’s Orion?” Grandfather asked.
Oakley shook her head. She didn’t know.
She had hidden under her bed until she thought Grandfather and Mean Vaughn were gone.
Then she’d climbed in her tunnel. To Grandfather’s office.
But someone had been in there.
She could hear them, but she didn’t know who it was. It had been a lady, though.
She’d been afraid it was the mean lady back again.
Oakley hid right where she was.
For a really long time.
She’d heard lots and lots of people in the hallway. She didn’t know if they were the mean people or the good ones. Mean Vaughn or the ladies.
“I don’t know. I want my brother! I want Nanny!” She wiggled. She didn’t want Grandfather to carry her.
He smacked her bottom quickly. “Stop that, young lady. We are getting out of here, as soon as I find Bonita. We shall just have to take you with us, then. Bonita is going to take care of you from now on.”
“Me and Orion?” All she wanted was her little brother.
To make sure he was ok.
“They have already found him. We will not be taking him with us now. Be quiet, young lady. I need tothink.”
