If the fire burned him, how would they even know what had happened to him? They probably hadn’t deserved this.

Any more than her Crispin had.

Bonnie pushed herself back up to her knees. Her uninjured hand landed on the man’s waist. She’d find his wallet. So they would at least betoldwhat had happened to him. Their son.

He was some mother’s son.

And what had happened to him wouldmatterto them.

She reached into his front pocket.

Cold metal met her fingertips.

Bonnie slipped it free of the man’s waist. She stared at it, in shock. In awe, that it was justthere.

Sheriff Lake had missed one.

Bonnie knew how to check if a gun was loaded.

It was.

It was very small. He had been lying on it apparently.

She wrapped her fingers around it.

He wouldn’t be needing it again.

Heather had gotten their attention. And they had certainly gotten hers. She was still processing what she had been told. By the governor. By the man’s wife, who was beyond herself with fear. For her sisters. Two of them. Who were missing.

Crispin was her sister, too.

Heather had never seen the governor’s wife up close before. She’d seen photos, of course. Had been struck by by the woman’s passing resemblance to Cashlyn, but it had been coincidence.

Or so she’d thought.

Now, though…her sister Denita had been a first class bitch. Heather would go to her grave believing that, seeing the pain on so many faces. So manyColesonfaces, no matter what name they went by.

A Coleson knew a Coleson when they saw one.

They had all been dealt a blow, not getting to know each other from the beginning. How could Denita have ever thought this was ok?

“The TSP is ten minutes out now, by air,” the guy from Major Crimes said, almost prowling. There was a beautiful woman behind him now. Just watching him, worriedly. “We’ll know more when they land. We can confirm Sydney is there, and Penelope. As well as the Coleson girl. But any word about Zoey?”

The chief just shook his head.

Zoey—the TSP sheriff who now worked for the governor as a special investigator. The woman who had raised Pen’s twin. Who had been taken from her home in Garrity. No one knew when…or where.

A niece Heather had never met. Who might have been missing as long as Crispin. Who was out there somewhere, no one knew where.

All they could do now was wait.

Both Denita’s twins taken. Both their mothers missing. That was too specific to be a coincidence.

Heather didn’t understand what was going on at all.

But she would. No matter what.
