Page 193 of Hearing her Cries

Shewould never let him have her daughter.

He started toward her, grabbing a shovel from where it leaned against the side of the building, almost as if put there by one of those angels for him to find now.

Hell. He’d forgotten. He’d left it there a few months back.

He was going to pulverize that bitch before they drove away. One good hit and that was all it would take. She fucking deserved it.

“She willneverbe yours.”

He raised the shovel. The same shovel Vaughn and Hector had used to bury the last stupid bitch Gregory had used as a surrogate for his baby making factory not even two months ago.

She’d netted them a nice chunk of change—twins: one boy, one girl. Sold in two different directions. Gregory had intended to use that one again. Until she’d bled to death in the damned basement after delivery.

Vaughn yanked the shovel up. One good hit. That’s all it would take to finish this bitch now.

His damned chest caught fire in an instant.

He stared at her, stunned. For a long moment.

Not believing she’d done it.

He hadn’t seen it. Hadn’t seen the gun in her hands.

He clutched his chest. Blood poured through his fingers.

She screamed when he cursed. The bitch ran. Behind the building or something.

He couldn’t follow. Vaughn hit his knees right there next to Gregory’s damned carriage house.

This was it.

The end.

He’d never have his precious angel now.

Her mother had stolen Crispin Maria from him forever. Just like Gregory had said that woman had stolen Denita’s daughters from Denita and Gregory, too.

Bonita had stolen his angel from him forever. She was the Darkness. She had taken everything. Just like his mama said theDarknesswould someday.

Vaughn hit the floor. Right next to the dark blue van.

Then hands were there.

Pulling, yanking. “Come on, you stupid bastard. We gotta go, Vaughn! The cops are coming! Some are already here, I think! Come on, or I’m leaving your ass!”

He would recognize that lisp anywhere.

Hector, stupid but loyal like always. Guy should just go. Get himself out of here before he got arrested. But he wasn’t. Hector was trying to help him.

Like a good brother would. They weren’t brothers by blood. But Hector wasfamily. He didn’t want Hector getting the needle for this. He had to get Hector out of here.

Somehow, Vaughn was on his feet. “Take the blue van. It’s less recognizable.”

Hector got him in the passenger seat. Vaughn told him exactly where to drive, what backroads and secret paths were there on the old Coleson Estate Gregory had worshipped so much.

Then they were back on the highway.

They could see choppers in the distance.
