And smiled.

That beautiful Crispin smile. “Aunt Heather! You’re here!”

Tears flooded Heather’s eyes.

“We’re all here, baby girl. It’s going to be ok.” She looked at Joy and jerked her head. Joy nodded, understanding what Heather meant. Like she always did. “Aunt Joy is going in with you, ok?”

“Where’s my mom? I want my mom.”

“I know. She’ll…be here soon, baby. We’re…still getting her, ok?”

“He’s my little brother. Orion. Don’t let him…get lost. Promise! Cashie, stay with him. He’s our baby brother. I really want my mom.” Crispin was looking. Searching for Bonnie in their faces. That Heather couldn’t make her mom just appear damned near brought Heather to her knees. “Don’t let my mom be worried about me, ok? I’m going to be ok. I don’t want my mom to be scared or worried, ok?”

The teenager’s words stabbed harder than the sharpest knife.

Then she was gone, being wheeled away toward an exam room. Joy followed behind.

Now?

They waited for Bonnie now.

They had loadedher and Murdoch and Oakley into a second helicopter. She stayed back, Oakley seat belted next to her, as they started an IV for the man she loved.

Zoey held his hand.

Zoey ignored every ache in her body. She knew she had broken ribs, probably a broken wrist.

None of it mattered.

Her sister was in another helicopter, racing through the darkening sky to the hospital.

They were going home. She just hoped it was in time.

Sydney…it hadn't looked good.

The odds that Sydney would get as lucky as Zoey had, as Charlotte had, as Lacy before her, as Ariella had—no one family could be that lucky. They just couldn't.

But Zoey prayed. Harder than she ever had in her life.

That that girl who had been through so much already would just get through this, too. That Pen was ok, going to be ok, that the trauma of what had happened there tonight hadn’t destroyed them all.

For now…they just had to get throughnow.

The real pain…the real pain would begin when the morning came.

Heather was still pacingin the emergency department when the chief found her long after they’d taken Crispin back. After a little boy was carried to an exam room by a blond woman in a TSP polo. Cashlyn had walked with him. She was going to stay with him until they knew…who he was. And where his parents were.

Where he had come from.

The chief was looking at her now.

She just stopped walking. Ember still slept. She’d slept just fine through the noise and commotion.

"The choppers are coming in now. We have multiple wounded.” His words were grim. Heather tensed.
