“What about my sister?”

“None of the victims matched her description, Heather. They are going to call me when they know for sure.”

Heather just nodded. She understood what he was saying. “Was she even there?”

“Sheriff Lake confirmed she was there, before he became unresponsive. He’s been hit multiple times and is coming on the second chopper. He said she was there. But the building where they were taken is fully engulfed. If your sister was still inside, there is a high likelihood she didn’t make it out. I’m sorry. We’re still looking. We won’t stop until we…know…for certain.”

She knew what he meant.

Heather nodded. She wasn’t about to break down. Not now.

She would break downafter.

Her family was looking at her tolead. That mattered. “Thank you, Chief Marshall. I know you didn’t have to include my family in this. But…we appreciate it.”

He looked right at her. “I know you’ve heard things about the Finley Creek TSP. But we…don’t work that way.MyTSP runs on honesty and integrity. If it’s not fully there yet—I’m going to get it there. I want to look myself in the mirror as I pin on my badge every day, lieutenant. You can count on that.”

She almost half thought he meant it.

Then again…police chief was a purely political position. She wasn’t a naive rookie. She knew exactly what men like him were.

She worked with them every day, after all.

They always knew the rightwords. It was the actions they had problems with.

He was still standing next to her when the first chopper landed.

And the first victim was wheeled in.

Zoey wasn’t aboutto let go of Oakley. They helped her out of the chopper after they’d unloaded Murdoch. He’d come back around in the chopper, after they’d hooked him up to an IV. But he hadn’t said anything. Just squeezed her fingers when she said his name.

Oakley was clinging like the frightened child she was. This was an utter nightmare for the little girl. And Zoey wasn’t about to let her go.

They wheeled Murdoch in. The helicopter pad had once been on top of the emergency department wing. But it had been destroyed in the storm. Rafe and the hospital had moved it to be closer to the entrance. Where the former parking structure had been.

Zoey just walked. Put one foot in front of the other.

Until…theywere there.

Someone stepped in front of her. She stopped walking.

And looked into eyes as brown as her own.

Her brothers were right there, big and strong andalmostidentical.

Rafe and Caine. They were there. Waiting for her.

Just like she had known they would be. She just looked at him.

Zoey just…started crying and couldn’t stop.

Caine took the little girl from her arms, even though Oakley cried and reached for her. Clung in terror.

“It’s ok, Oakley. These aremybrothers, sweetheart. We’re safe here. I promise.”

Rafe scooped her into his strong arms. Zoey’s least injured arm went around his neck. As her big brother carried her inside.
