“Hey, it’s ok. I’m here. I’m here.” She’d always hated it when Pen was afraid. “Pen, sit down. I need you to tell me exactly what happened.”

Shit, shit, shit.Gregory was going to be pissed.

That damned redheaded guardian of hell had stopped him again. Vaughn had to give her credit. She’d fought him a lot harder than he would have expected her to.

But the dark-haired angel was safe for the moment. The one Vaughn kept thinking about, over and over.

More than he ever had a woman before.

He’d been told to getherfor Gregory. But he just hadn’t been able to do it. He just hadn’t.

He hadn’t been able to get that girl out of his head. Not since she’d smiled at him like that outside the math building at FCU.

He’d even started dreaming about her now. The things he had done to that girl in his dreams…he still felt it.

That had never happened to him before.

That had totally freaked him out. Like…she was one of those demon creatures his mom had used to say stole men’s souls. Made them dowrongthings.

In the stories his mother used to tell him. The ones Gregory had told him were nothing more than crude myths.

But how could a girl who smiled so innocently be that evil?

Vaughn knew her name. Crispin Maria. It fit her, he decided. Maria was so feminine. He wasn’t sure about Crispin, it sounded like a name for a man, but it rolled off his tongue perfectly with Maria.

Maybe she had truly stolen his soul?

The other dark-haired girl hadn’t had nearly the same impact on him. Probably because they didn’t have the same eyes. The eyes were definitely different. The hair was a little different, too.

That other dark-haired daughter of Denita justlookeddifferent in a way.

Harder, less magical. Older, more experienced, too. Knowing. He knew that other one wasn’t a virgin or nothing, too. He knew she’d spent the night with that guy she had been dating a few months back.

The innocence in his angel’s face had definitely been missing in the other girl’s face, too. That mattered. So much.

A part of Vaughn wanted to protect sweet Crispin Maria, help her keep that innocence. Shelter her from the world and the darkness that was in it. Crispin Maria was more like an angel than a demon. No denying that.

She deserved a good man who would take care of her. Protect her.

Vaughn…wanted to be that man. He thought about that for a moment while Gregory ranted about his failure. Vaughn didn’t really give a shit what Gregory thought right now. He’d protected the angel.Thatwas what had mattered.

He could do it. Forever, if he wanted. Protect her.

He had everything he needed to take care of a girl like that.

Vaughn was old enough to be her father. But he didn’t care. He honestly didn’t care.

Hell, she was only like eighteen or nineteen—twenty at the very most—and he knew that.

He just wanted her for himself. Wanted that innocence. Innocence like that should be protected. Cherished.

There was nothing wrong with it. Guys did it with younger women all the time.

He could take care of her. He didn’t really need Gregory’s money now to do the things he wanted. His Crispin Maria wouldn’t want for anything.

Gregory wasn’t the only guy he’d done these types of “hired” jobs for. There were lots of other damned crooks in Finley Creek who had paid him to do what they wanted for years. He could raise up a band of pals to help him do what he needed in an instant—for the right price. Besides Hector.
