I stroked my chin, freshly shaven as of that morning. “An hour for breakfast. I should be able to fit that into my schedule.” I puzzled it over in my mind. My first thought was, I couldn’t touch my work schedule. My second was, I didn’t want to shorten my work hours. My third was, get up an hour earlier? I already got up at five most mornings, if not earlier than that. This is crazy, Brenn. You made a commitment. I’ll show up an hour later to work. I can do that. I’m the boss, and nothing will catch on fire if I’m there one hour less.

“Deal. I’ll see you and the kids tomorrow at seven am sharp.”

“Deal.” Riley held out his hand for a shake. Clever little omega, making a businessman stick to his word. I extended my hand and took his, enjoying the way my palm enveloped his whole hand. Serenity washed over me. There was something about Riley I couldn’t put my finger on. I didn’t want to let go.

After a long moment, I forced my fingers apart. “Goodnight, Riley.”

“Goodnight, sir.”

“Don’t sir me, please. Just call me Brennan. Or Brenn. I like it when you do that.”

“Okay. Goodnight, Brennan.”

It was a long walk back to my room as I contemplated what was going on with me. I didn’t know exactly, but one thing was for sure. I was looking forward to breakfast more than I had in years.

Chapter 5

Brennan

Igot up at the sametime the next morning and spent the first two hours of the day working out, listening to an audiobook on the treadmill before showering and getting myself dressed. I had a special pep in my step, thinking about who was waiting for me in the kitchen.

I sent Diana a voice message. “Coming in an hour late today. Let everybody know and make sure the place doesn’t collapse while I’m not there.”

Her reply was instantaneous. “It won’t, I’ll make sure of that.” She also sent a winky face. Since when did she send emojis? I shook my head, chuckling. Having Petey, Riley, and Holden in the house was shaking everything up, in the best way.

I heard them all before I saw them. Holden was running in circles around the kitchen island, singing a sound about a shark at the top of his lungs. Petey was in a high chair patting his chubby little hands on the flat, table-like surface. There was a bowl in front of him, and Riley was trying to get him to eat something. His hair seemed to always be a little bit disheveled, like he got out of bed in a hurry, and it was charming.

“Using the old airplane trick, I see.” I stuck my hands in my pockets and just smiled in a satisfied way.

Riley turned his head, and when he saw me, his smile was radiant. “You came.”

“I gave my word, didn’t I?”

“Yes, but you billionaires can be slimy- oops.” He slapped a hand over his mouth.

I shrugged. “You’re right, we can be, but I’m not gonna be slimy about this.” I came forward and sat on the other side of the high chair. “So. What’s this?” I gestured vaguely toward Petey’s face, which had a little bit of white mush on it.
