“Thank you, doctor.” I turned to Brennan and clapped my hands together. “Now I’ve got the perfect excuse to redecorate.”

He laughed. “You’ve been wanting to redecorate this whole time? Why didn’t you just say so?”

“I’ve been itching to, but I never put it at the top of my priorities list. Now, I’m going to. Our baby can come into a fresh, new space. We’ll be so busy once they’re born.”

Brennan shrugged. “Whatever makes you happy, you know that.” I whisked around our bedroom, pointing out things that had been on my mind for a while now.

“The first thing we’re gonna do is make some changes. This wallpaper has got to go, and this carpet in not the vibe. All this money and you couldn’t find someone to do this properly the first time?” I tsked at Brennan.

Brennan laughed. “You’re cute when you’re sassy.”

“You say that now.”

He kissed my forehead. “I’ll say that always.”

The five month gestation flew past, and soon I was waddling around like, as Brennan said, “an adorable duck instead of a squirrel,” ready to pop. He couldn’t keep his hands off me, and the feeling was mutual.

“I didn’t know I could ever be so happy,” Brennan murmured. My head rested on his chest after a round ofvigorouslovemaking, my protruding belly a heavy weight against his abs. He held my hand in his huge paw, turning it over, and I loved how my hand covered only his palm. “I thought having lots of money and success made me happy.”

“Didn’t it?” I teased.

“Of course it did,” he chuckled. “I just never imagined that things could get better. I can’t fly any higher in life. If I do, I’ll go straight to heaven. I’m so happy I could die.”

“Don’t do that just yet. I’m not ready to be the rich widower. I need several decades of this, with you and all the kids.” As if they heard their O-Dad talking, the twins I carried moved in my womb, poking out with a foot or elbow, something pointy enough to make me feel it.

“Ouch,” I rubbed the spot. “We’re putting these kids in MMA as soon as they’re big enough to stand up.” It hadn’t taken long to discover I was pregnant with twins. Since I was nearly at term, my belly poked out almost as far horizontally as I was tall.

Brennan pulled me closer, nuzzling my neck and rubbing the spot where one of his children had karate kicked my liver. “Mated bliss.”

I nodded, never wanting him to let go. “Mated bliss.”

Soon, our family of four would grow to six. I couldn’t wait, and I didn’t have to wait too long.
