“Oh my god.” I reached out a hand to touch the plaque. “I’ve never had anything like this at any of my jobs.”

“You like it?”

“I love it. I feel so official.”

“You are.” He opened the door for me and let me into the biggest bedroom I’d ever been in.

My eyes bugged out of my head. “This is mine?”

“This is yours. It’s big enough, isn’t it?” His voice dropped an octave.

“Oh, it’s plenty big. Bigger than any apartment I’ve ever lived in, don’t worry.” I adjusted Holden on my hip as I walked further into the room. I spun around once, amazed by all the space I had. I was dreaming. I had stumbled into my dream job in a dream mansion with...my dream boss? Who seemed to be into me? I swear it was supposed to be a bad thing, because it come could with major consequences. For whatever reason, I wasn’t scared. For some reason, I wasn’t fighting it, whateveritwas.

Brennan spoke up behind me. “The nanny’s quarters is just one room with an in-suite bathroom, but I think I’d better give you the room next to it for your son. It has an attached door.” He rattled off a few basics about how the home was run, his work schedule, what he expected me to do.

“I want to be an involved uncle, or father, or guardian.” He tapped his lip, squinting. “I still don’t know how this is all going to work, and I’m not used to being confused about things. I like to be in control.”He wants to be involved? What an alpha. I’m going to melt into the floor.

“Confusion comes with the territory, believe me. Three years in and I still don’t know what I’m doing with this one.” I lowered my chin to indicate my son, who had fallen asleep against my shoulder. His drool was working its way into my shirt, leaving a wet patch.

“Do you ever figure it out?” I grinned, shaking my head slowly. Brennan cursed and we both laughed. “Any questions so far?” I shook my head fast, my eyes wide, afraid that if I asked any questions I’d break whatever special spell had brought me here, in front of this alpha bear. It was more than I could have ever hoped for, in the desperate situation I was in just twenty-four hours earlier.

“Thank you, sir, thank you for giving me a chance. You won’t regret it, you’ll see.”

“No, I think I won’t regret it.” He looked me up and down, a powerful man, predator, and alpha. His gaze pinned me in place. For a moment, it was as if I was being hunted, but in the best way. There was a hum low in my belly, something stirring, something waking up. I stuffed down the pang of arousal as he turned his attention away from me. “I’ll have someone show you around. I trust you know what a baby needs?”

“Supplies and things? Of course.”

He pulled out a credit card made of a metal that was probably from the moon. “This is for expenses. The baby’s and for yours. Anything he needs, buy it. Anything you need, buy it.” Anything I needed, too? I needed a lot of things.

“Okay. I’ll get started right away getting things for Petey.”

“For you and your son, as well. Clothes and things. Redecorate your rooms. Whatever you want.” He waved a hand. It was very nonchalant, but it wasn’t dismissive, the way I would expect from someone with so much money to act. Brennan smiled at me, and it was tender and sweet, another thing I never thought I’d see from a billionaire.

“I’m really glad to have you. I want you to feel comfortable and safe with us so you stay for a long time.”

“I-I do. I will.”

“Perfect.” His pocket vibrated. “Gotta go. You’re good for now?”

“Better than good.”

“Let me know directly if you need something.” He put the phone to his ear. “Yeah, Bob, tell me what’s up with the numbers. This quarter’s already been insane.”

“Yes, I, okay,” I stammered as he turned and walked out the door and down the hallway in a way only a billionaire could.

Like he owned the place, a sprawling estate that easily cost a couple hundred million dollars. And yet, he had been so kind to me.

I clutched the credit card to my chest. It was my lifeline. It was me and my kiddo’s key to the present, and hopefully the future, too. Brennan wanted me to stay, and I would, until Petey graduated from college if he wanted me to.

I’d stay for the alpha, too. I’d stay for him, I’d do whatever he wanted. Especially if he wanted me by his side. In his arms. In his bed.Knock it off, Riley. That’s dangerous thinking.

Was it, though? I’d soon find out.
