Page 26 of Betrayal and Ruin

“Don’t lie to us,” runner asshole growls menacingly.

My knees wobble but then I take a deep breath, trying not to choke on the cologne wafting from the men sent to intimidate me. I straighten my spine because showing weakness to them was my first mistake.

But maybe I can right the sinking ship.

“Why would I tell you anything? I thought I was supposed to be reporting to my father,” the words are crisp on my tongue, and they have weight in the space between us.

“Oh, princess,” runner twat sneers the word as amusement and scorn dance in his eyes. “Don’t think too highly of yourself. It’ll be a mighty fall from your throne.”

I stare back at the man, unblinking, unwilling to shrink back again in front of him. I’m out numbered, but I’m done being meek for the cause.

Fucking gag me.

The third puppet for the cause looks at me like he’s really seeing me for the first time. He drops the bravado, no longer eyeing me like a piece of meat he wants to devour. He shakes his head slowly, warning flashing in his eyes.

“Cillian sent us to make sure all the information you gather is being relayed and goes straight to him. He thought it might be,” he pauses like he’s about to deliver me a gift with his words, “unsavory to continue to go to your father when Cillian is the one who needs the information first.”

My mouth is so damn dry, but there’s nothing I can do about it. Not right now.

I nod, my brain trying to come up with…something. But I’m blank. All I can do is hand over the little bit of information I have and hope for the best.

Maybe I should tell Declan everything.

“When I got to the office, Declan,” Cillian’s men arch their eyebrows in synch like they’ve been practicing and I try and fight the blush rising on my cheeks and fail, “I mean Mr. McCarthy, was finishing up a meeting with Niall Farrell.”

The faces of Cillian’s men turn to stone while Finn doesn’t look like he gives a damn what is happening here or anywhere else. It must be nice to live without a care in the world. I’m over here fucking drowning.

“Why didn’t you call right away?” Runner dipshit’s voice is menacing.

All my bravado is ripped away from me to be replaced by fear. My entire body starts to shake as the man steps closer, the air around him shimmering with the promise of violence.

“I don’t,” I start, but I clamp my lips closed because I don’t have an excuse. Is there even an excuse?

Runner jerk slams his hand against the wall next to my head. My heart goes into overdrive, trying to punch its way right out of my chest. It probably wants to abandon me and right now, I can’t say I blame the poor organ.

Sticking with me is not the best bet.

It’ll just get crushed in the end. By which side is anyone’s guess at this point.

“The next time you have information like that,” the third guy’s eyes flare but he doesn’t get in my space, “you better reach out right away.”

“O-o-okay,” I struggle to get the word out.

Runner shit stain barely manages to pull himself back from me. I can see how much he wants to show me how to be a good girl for the cause by force. It’s written all over his face.

“Remember your fucking place,” he growls, the sound ramping up my fear and panic.

Flight is looking mighty good right about now. If only my feet didn’t feel like they were being weighed down with concrete and the desperate hope someone will save me.

He slams down the hallway with his cohort and Finn trailing along behind him. I’m shaking, the wall barely holding me up as I try to suck air into my lungs.

I didn’t know I signed up to be a spy when I was born. This whole thing is fucking ridiculous.

It takes me far too long to get my shit together and when I pull my phone out of my bag with shaking hands, I realize I’m going to be late for work. That’s not good. I might not actually care about the job, but I do care about my work ethic.

It doesn’t just disappear when you’re sent in on some undercover mission. No one else may care, but I do.

Then there’s how being fired would not end well for me. When will Cillian’s men show up to ask me more questions?
