“Don’t be. The world’s a better place without them. Trust me.”

Ethan and Anthony seemed uncomfortable, and that was fine since they couldn’t possibly understand, nor did he want them to. He could sometimes see pity in their eyes when they looked at him, clearly remembering his confession at the cabin. He wouldn’t be able to stomach more of that.

Jay took out a wine bottle and four paper cups from the basket. “Should we raise a toast to celebrate?”

“Jay,” Ethan hissed.

“Yes, let’s.” Chris was grateful that at least one of them got it, even though it was Jay.

Cups in hand, the four of them sat in a circle under the shade. It felt as though they were the only ones in the park.

Jay cleared his throat. “Here’s to bad people getting what they deserve. May they rot in hell.”

“Amen to that,” Chris said, and they clinked their cups.

The weekend passed in a blur. Chris’s thoughts shifted from worrying about Mickey to digesting the death of his adoptive parents. He hadn’t told Melissa about the passing of Robert and Kim. As far as she was concerned, Chris had no other family except for her and the twins. It had been years since the Mitchells last came up in any of their conversations.

He parked his car in the underground parking lot and made his way to the 35thfloor, where the junior partners sat. The secretary at the reception desk smiled at him.

“Good morning, Mr. Roberts. Mr. Wilson is expecting you in his office.”

Chris froze. Mickey was expecting him at this hour? He usually came to work much later.

“Thank you.” Chris hurried back to the elevator. This is good, he told himself. He preferred to get this thing out of the way instead of dragging it further.

Mickey smiled when Chris entered his office. “Good morning.” He gestured to the chair on the other side of his deck. “How was your weekend?”

Chris sat down. “Hectic.”

Mickey pursed his lower lip. “More clients for you to please?”

Chris held back his anger. “No.”

“Well, good. Even professionals need their rest. Something to drink?”

“I’m fine. You wanted to see me?”

“Straight to business, good. What do you think of this?” Mickey picked up a large cardboard sign and placed it on his desk.

Chris narrowed his eyes. When his brain finally processed what he was seeing, he burst out laughing.

Mickey looked from the cardboard to Chris. “I don’t see what’s funny.”

Chris cleared his throat. “Sorry, you caught me by surprise.” He pointed at the cardboard that showed Mickey standing with his arms crossed, a serious expression on his face. The big text read,Michael Wilson for mayor!A city to be proud of.

“Are you serious with this?”

Mickey nodded. “As serious as a heart attack. You don’t approve?”

Basic logic didn’t approve. “It’s… great?”

Mickey nodded, pleased. “I was debating whether to go with Mickey or Michael, but my strategist believes Michael is more mature.” He put the cardboard down, thank God. “So, to business. I’m sure you’re wondering what I want from you following my latest discovery about your… second job? Yes, let’s go with that.”

Chris sat a bit straighter, feeling like he was about to receive crucial test results from the doctor.

“Tobias and Oscar,” Mickey said.
