“No.”

“If you had another way to do this, you would have told me already.”

Chris’s throat tightened. This was a nightmare in the making, but the alternative was even worse. He stood up and unbuttoned his shirt with unsteady hands. While Jay picked out his outfit, he got fully naked and folded his clothes neatly, a habit that seemed silly now.

Jay came back and placed his choices on one of the chairs. He picked up a simple leather collar and told Chris to face the long mirror on the wall. Jay stood behind him, his long hair and thick beard a complete contrast to Chris’s smooth appearance.

Jay raised the collar and fastened it around Chris’s neck. While watching each other in the mirror, Jay said, “I’ve never met any of the people in this fancy club, and I don’t know what they might think or how they might act, but I do know that no one here can outmatch you.”

Confused by the words, Chris shook his head. “You’re wrong. Those people are brilliant.”

“I’ve known you for over a decade. You were a scared kid who walked around Ethan like a shadow, always looking on edge. I told Ethan there was something wrong with you, that you were bad news. He said he couldn’t wait for the day I’d eat my own words.”

“You were right, I am bad news.”

“Self-pity doesn’t look good on you.”

Chris wiped his eyes. “Fuck you.”

“My point is, I know that you can handle this. Help me put this on.”

With his breath held tight, Chris raised each leg so Jay could slip him into the fishnet stockings. They reached his upper thighs, stopping right below his ass. They felt wrong against his skin, although he had worn such things before, many years ago. Jay picked up a black leather skirt, and Chris slipped sheepishly inside, too spent to argue. The skirt sat low, showing his hip bones.

Jay said, “You survived Mr. David, and you survived your adoptive family. None of the fuckers here can hurt you. And to make things easier...” He picked up another item of clothing from the chair.

“Is that…?

“Found it lying around.”

Seeing the black mask spread relief throughout Chris’s body.

They wouldn’t see him. He was safe.

Jay placed the mask over Chris’s head. It kept his face covered except for his eyes, nostrils, and mouth. His blue eyes looked bloodshot against the black leather.

“I look ridiculous.” He turned to face Jay.

“Yeah? I’m aroused.”

“Don’t get any ideas.”

Jay’s features turned serious. “I will need to play the asshole, or they won’t buy it. It shouldn’t be too difficult, but it won’t be pretty.”

“Do what you need to do, but don’t pretend that Anthony is willing to meet Tobias again. It would never happen, and Tobias knows that. When you push for a one-off meeting between all of us on Fire Island, don’t commit to having Anthony become a regular at the Club. Leave it as a possibility.”

“Was what went down between them that bad?”

“Yes.”

The door opened. Mickey stepped inside and blinked at Chris. “Well, damn. That’s… brilliant.” He nodded his approval. “So, if we’re done with the daily drama, I’d like to get the show started before the next election.”

“You’re never going to be mayor,” Jay said. “Not in a thousand years. You know that, right?”

Mickey rolled his eyes. “Like you even vote. Let’s go.”

People stared as he walked past them—like he knew they would. They also stared at Jay, who did not look like he belonged as either a member or a toy. But Jay walked like he owned the place with his head held high, not even glancing at the people around him.
