“I can only guess, and I don’t like guessing. Just try to keep your cool, and don’t let him bully you around.”

“Is he the bullying type?”

“Yes, but he’s smart enough to hide it. Come on, I’ll take you to his office.”

“You’ll stay with me?”

“I’ll try.”

They left the cage inside one of Chris’s drawers and then walked to the elevator. Chris pressed the button for the 36thfloor, and once there, they made their way down a hallway with only a few doors, which likely meant big offices. They passed a small kitchen area with fruits and champagne on the counter. “They also have showers and massage chairs on this floor,” Chris said.

Anthony sighed. “Can’t win in court without a proper massage, I suppose.”

Chris snickered. “You’re not impressed, good. And don’t think I didn’t notice how nice you’ve dressed.”

Anthony hid a smile. “These old things?”

Chris slowed down. “That’s his office.”

They stopped walking in front of one of the corner offices.

“Where is everyone?” Anthony asked quietly.

“The more you earn, the earlier you leave. Ready?”

Before Anthony could reply, the office door opened. Anthony looked straight ahead, then had to lower his eyes to see the man in front of him. That’s Mickey?Chris had called him a shark, but five-foot-four Mickey was more like a baby dolphin. His smile was too big for his not-so-large face. His dark hair was thinning, but he still combed it sideways.

“Right on time,” Mickey said, his voice high and carrying an annoying nasally pitch to it.

Chris cleared his throat. “This is—”

“Anthony. Of course. You’re a big one, aren’t you?”

“Depends on where you’re looking from.”

Chris coughed and lightly elbowed Anthony, who kicked himself mentally and reminded himself to behave. “Nice to meet you.”

Mickey’s eyes moved quickly, sizing Anthony from top to bottom. “Are you in a hurry?”

“Hurry? Hmm, no.”

“Wonderful.” He turned to Chris. “I’m sure you have important work to finish. I’ll message you when Anthony and I are done getting better acquainted.”

“Well, I—”

Mickey pulled Anthony inside and locked the door behind them. Anthony was struck by how huge the office was. A small department could have fit in there.

“Impressive, isn’t it?”

“Do you need all this space?”

Mickey laughed. “You know, nobody ever asked me that. You don’t approve?”

Be polite. You’re here for Chris.“It’s awesome. I’m sure you’ve worked hard to get here.”

“Or maybe I just hung with the right crowd—like Chris is hoping to.”

“Chris is an amazing lawyer.”
