Tobias sat down on the bed and rested his hand on Anthony’s shoulder. “Save your strength.”

He almost laughed. There was no strength in him to save.

“Tell me, do you feel your eyes losing focus, and your heart beating louder as it struggles to handle your thickening blood?”

Anthony nodded, feeling that Tobias was inside his skeleton, witnessing the destruction of his organs. He prided himself on being the healthiest person he knew, and it was hard to grasp how quickly his body had been brought down.

The weight on the bed shifted when Tobias lay next to him. They had lain like that many times, usually after sex, but sometimes instead of it. Anthony tried to focus his eyes on the man next to him, to search for an ounce of humanity, but his eyes failed him like the rest of his body.

Tobias stroked his cheek gently. “You see how easy it is to break a toy?”

Anthony managed a single nod.

“It pains me to see you like this, although we both know the fault is yours. I’m here now so we can start a new page. Your healing can begin tonight if you accept that our relationship is not for you to end. Things will obviously need to change from now on. You will move in with me, and you will no longer need to humiliate yourself by fixing other people’s houses. I will provide you with everything you could possibly need. Do you agree?”

Anthony nodded, knowing he was agreeing to something terrible, but it couldn’t be worse than this.

Tobias kissed Anthony’s parched lips. “My stubborn toy. Forever mine.”

When the pounding started, Anthony was sure it was coming from inside his head, but that would not have caused Tobias to jolt up from the bed, or Dima to enter the room and ask, “Are you expecting someone?”

“Of course not.”

“Room service?”

“Does this look like the Hilton to you? Come with me.”

“What about him?”

“He can’t even say his name.”

With his eyes closed, Anthony could hear them walking away and closing the door behind them. Voices followed, people talking—no, shouting. Why were they shouting? He tried to listen because a small voice in his head insisted this was important.

“Out of my fucking way!”

That voice didn’t belong to Tobias or Dima.

“You’re making a mistake,” Tobias said, although gone was the typical calm in his voice.

“Where is he? Is he in there?”

“Calm down, Mr. Roberts, and let us talk with reason. First, how on earth have you discovered this apartment?”

“I saw in the security cameras that Anthony walked into the building but never walked out. I bribed the cleaning crew to keep an eye on you.”

“Oh my, you really are something special—don’t waste it.”

“I’m not here for ass-kissing. Where’s Anthony?”

“Should I take him down?” Dima asked.

The thought of Dima hurting Chris was petrifying. Anthony pushed himself up but immediately slumped on the bed with a grunt, cursing his inability to help himself in the most crucial moments of his life.

“Boss, say the word and I’ll take him down.”

“Well, I’d hate to make this even more dramatic, but if we must…”

“Don’t touch me!” Chris yelled.
