Chris caught Dima smiling before he left the room.

Something isn’t right. He could feel it in his bones.

“Did you keep yourself entertained while we played with your toys?” Oscar asked Jay.

“Yeah, had a blast.”

“Good. I had a lovely time with both Chris and Ethan.” He turned to Ethan. “You have to come to the club as my personal guest. You might find it boring because of all the boring lawyers, but the entertainment and drinks are well worth it.”

“Let me think about it.”

At the sound of approaching footsteps, Chris and Jay turned around. Tobias walked in carrying a briefcase, his face flushed. Dima walked behind him, smirking.

Anthony wasn’t with them.

Jay cleared his throat. “Aren’t you forgetting someone?”

Tobias ignored him and went to sit on the couch facing Oscar and Ethan. Jay sat next to Ethan as Chris moved to stand behind the couch.

“Where is he?” Ethan asked.

“Anthony is perfectly safe, I assure you.” Tobias seemed perfectly composed. “I would like for you to keep calm and listen to my offer.”

“We’ve already gone over the negotiation part,” Jay said coldly. “Now’s the part where we go on our merry way.”

“I would like for Anthony to stay here for one month,” Tobias said. “For that, I will compensate you with the sum of fifty thousand dollars.”

“No,” Jay and Ethan said together.

Unfazed, Tobias continued. “In addition, I will also forgive your pitiful attempt to plant recording equipment in my office.”

Chris leaned on the back of the couch, cold dread spreading at the pit of his stomach. He wondered whether Tobias had known all along what they were here to do, or whether they had made a mistake along the way.

“You planted recording equipment in Tobias’s office?” Oscar looked around in shock. “What were you boys expecting to find? The man is as boring as a grapefruit!Iwould have provided you with a lot more juice.”

Tobias rolled his eyes and said, “My offer is fair. And unlike yours, mine is also truthful. You don’t have anyone to send to our club.”

Oscar turned to Ethan. “I knew you were too nice to be a pimp.” He turned to Jay. “You, however, are a natural.”

“Oh, for the love of God, shut your pie hole already,” Tobias snapped.

Oscar huffed but didn’t respond.

Tobias cleared his throat. “As I was saying, I’m willing to ignore your sneaky behavior, which I’m sure is connected to Mickey and his illusion of becoming mayor. Plus, you will leave here with a nice sum of money that should make Anthony’s temporary absence all the more bearable.”

“You don’t really think that—”

“E, let it go.” Jay stood. “I’m pretty sure Dima here is packing.”

Dima smiled and nodded.

Jay pointed at the briefcase. “Show me.”

Tobias placed the briefcase on the table and opened it. Bills. A lot of bills. Chris never thought he’d see something like that outside of a movie. But thishadto be a movie because no way in hell were they leaving Anthony behind.

“Tobias, you should’ve spoken with me about this.” The playfulness was gone from Oscar’s voice, reminding Chris that this man was also a predator.

“This doesn’t concern you. You had your fun, didn’t you?”
