“That doesn’t mean…” she trails off and I know what’s coming next. “Fuck.”

My jaw drops before I burst out laughing. Okay, I didn’t know what was coming next, because I didn’t expect that. I just knew she was going to realize I was right.

“Did you just say fuck?” I ask between giggles.

“I did. Your new attitude is rubbing off on me. I used to swear a lot before Benji came along.”

“Sorry about that.”

“Don’t be. I said it last night and Grant happened to love it. He—”

“Ahh, stop right there.” I bite back a smile so she doesn’t hear it in my voice. “I do not need any more details.”

“Wait, I don’t mean—”

“Nope. Moving on.”

Sara giggles and the sound comforts me. God, I’m lucky to have her. She’s always been a godsend, but in the last few months, she’s become my rock. My sounding board. The only person I truly feel like I can trust.

“Thank you,” I say out of nowhere, stopping her laughter.

“For what?” she asks.

“For always being there for me.”

“I said I would be.”

“I know. But I still want to say thank you.”

“You’re welcome. But please remember you love me after our next conversation.”

My heart jolts at her words. That’s never a good way to start something. “Okay,” I hesitate.

Sara sighs. “I called for a reason.”

“Okay,” I say again, my nerves increasing.

“Tate stopped by.”

“What?” My pulse spikes as a strange nervousness flows through me. One that’s beyond my control. Like it’s coming from a place I haven’t explored. Jesse told me everything. I know what Tate did and I know he had nothing to do with Jade’s fall. But something still feels off. Jesse didn’t seem concerned but… God, who do I trust? “What happened?”

“He stopped by yesterday to talk to you. Said it was fairly urgent. At first, he was pleasant, charming even. But when I said you weren’t here, he didn’t believe me. It was weird.”

“Shit. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. He wasn’t threatening or anything. Just…I don’t know. Like I said. It was weird. Thankfully, Neil came in to buy his wife an anniversary present, and Tate left. I’ve been here for a couple of hours this morning, and he hasn’t come back. I’m hoping that’s the end of it. But seeing him made me remember he’d called last week too.”

Jesus. What the hell does he want? He never once spoke to me when we were in school. Why now? Has he spoken to Jesse? Does he think I’m going to go to the police? After all these years?

Thank God for Neil. He runs the local hardware store and hardly ever visits us, unless it’s for his anniversary or his wife’s birthday. I shouldn’t be worried. Tate has never done anything untoward, but for some reason, I’m still grateful that Neil was there. Something’s not sitting right.

“I’m sorry you had to deal with that. I’ll be home tomorrow.”

“I know. And don’t worry, I didn’t tell him anything. He rubbed me the wrong way.”

I bark out a laugh and vow to give her the biggest hug when I get back.

“So, tell me.” She moves on. “What are your plans for today? Sightseeing?”
