“I definitely want to see Rodeo Drive and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But first I have lunch with Jesse.” I mumble the last part, but of course she picks up on it.

“I’m sorry, what?” She fake gasps, but I can hear the smile in her voice.

“I want to see Rodeo Drive and—”

“Don’t mess with me… Jesse?”

“As I said, he was there last night and we had a few…ah…confrontations, and it ended with him asking me to lunch.”

“And you said yes?”

“I did. Because I can’t seem to think clearly when it comes to him.”

“This is good. You’re making my day,” she says, trying to hold the excitement out of her tone. “But I’m curious…what kind of confrontations?”

My face contorts into an uncomfortable grimace. “Mm…maybe confrontations was the wrong term.”

“Okay, what’s the right one?”

“I yelled at him and we almost kissed.”I would have kissed him back if he hadn’t pulled away.“Then I realized I was only there because Raven’s wanted him, and I confronted Kim about it.”

“Jesus. That’s a lot.”

“It is. Thank you for not gushing.”

“Why would I gush?”

“The almost kiss.”

“Oh, don’t worry. I’m excited about that, but I’m not going to throw it in your face when there’s other things to talk about. Like your epiphany.”

“What epiphany?”

“You agreed to spend time with Jesse, so you must have figured something out.”

“I guess. But I don’t really think it was an epiphany.”

“So, I can gush?” her voice rises.

“No. No gushing. I’m still hurt. It’s just lunch.”For now.

“Oh-kay.”

“Shut up.” I smile.

“I didn’t say anything,” she protests.

“You didn’t have to. It was all in the tone.”

“I love you.”

“I know. But I better go. He’s picking me up in thirty minutes.”

“Oooh, what are you wearing?” So much for not getting gushy.

“Something boring,” I deadpan, rolling my eyes even though she can’t see them. “Goodbye, Sara.”

“Bye.” She laughs.
