Tate?

I drop my shoe as I grab the phone, slowly lowering myself to the bed. “Hi. Uh. How are you?”And why are you calling?I don’t even know how to talk to him. We’veneverspoken.

“I’ve been better,” he says before releasing a long sigh. “God, I don’t even know how to say this. Do you think we could meet in person?”

What? “No! I mean, I’ve got a lot going on. I’m not sure when I’ll have time to meet, but I’m free to talk now,” I lie. I’m so late, but I don’t want him here.

Tate huffs out a laugh. “Yeah, that’s what this is about.”

“What is?” I rush out, cursing myself for not hiding my nerves.

“I saw you’ve been hanging out with Jesse and…” he trails off.

“And…”

My hands shake, clenched too tightly from the tension building up inside me.

“We both did. There are photos of the two of you.”

“Both?”

“I’m kind of hoping I’m wrong, but Alex saw the photos when I did and started searching for information on Jesse.”

My chest tightens, but I try not to freak out. Not yet. “What do you mean?”

“He asked me how well I knew him. Even looked him up online. Not that he knows I saw that but it happened.”

“Okay.”

“There’s more… When you were in the hospital for your ankle, he wanted to visit, but I told him to stay away. He completely flipped out and said I needed to stay out of his business.”

While that should be concerning, I know what that was about so I’m not worried. But the Jesse stuff has me on edge.

“So, you think he’s after Jesse?” I ask, though I’m not sure why he would be…unless he knows?

Tate huffs. “No, I’m worried he’s afteryou!”What?“I don’t know if it’s an obsession or a game…or it could be nothing… I just think you should be wary of him. Has he been by or called?”

“No, not for a while.”You’re the only one that’s been sending strange messages and—“Wait. How did you get my number?”

“Your website.”

“When?” I ask, my voice coming out in a whisper.

“This morning.”

Oh God. Oh God. The messages were from Alex? Not Tate. Does he know?

“How worried do I need to be?” I ask, trying to keep the panic out of my tone.

“I don’t know. Maybe he’s just pissed that you rejected him and now you’re with Jesse.”

God, I wish that was it, but I know that it’s not. Only thing is, I’m not sure if I trust Tate enough to tell him that. This could still be a ploy to see if I remember or to find out if Jesse’s told me.

“Okay. Thank you for letting me know,” I say with an unwavering voice.

“I’m sorry, Willow. I really hope it’s nothing.”

“Thanks. Me too.”
