“Glad you’re okay, Macy.”

She glanced at Reath and nodded. “Thanks for coming.” She looked back at me. “And for being so fast.”

“He came in the back?” Reath asked.

Macy nodded, then lifted her chin and glanced around. “You’re sure he’s gone?”

I saw her shiver and slid an arm around her. “He’s gone.”

We reached the back door, and she swallowed. It was clear he’d broken the glass and reached inside.

Reath crouched, careful not to touch anything. “There’s a wine bottle here.”

“Oh, um, that was me. I threw it at him.”

I stilled. “You threw it at him? Instead of running?”

“I wasn’t really thinking clearly, Colt. I was afraid. I ran afterward.”

Jesus. If he’d gotten his hands on her…

“You didn’t recognize him?” Reath rose.

“No. He was dressed all in black, with a ski mask and gloves.”

“We probably won’t find anything, but I’ll get my guy to look for prints. And I’ll report this to the police.”

She wrapped her arms around her middle. “Right.”

I pulled her closer. “Pack a bag.”

“What?”

“It’s not safe here. We need to get your door fixed, and new locks.” And a state-of-the-art security system. And I wanted whoever had broken in behind bars before she came back.

“I don’t have anywhere to go. I…” She looked around, and I could tell she really didn’t want to stay.

“You do.” I cupped her shoulders. “You’re staying with me. I’ll make sure you’re safe.”

Her lips parted. Over her head, I saw Reath not bothering to hide his smile.

“Go,” I urged. “Get some things.”

With a nod, she headed for her bedroom.

I looked at my brother. “Find whoever did this, Reath. Before I do.”

MACY

“You can sleep in my bedroom, Macy.”

I smiled down at Daisy. She was so sweet, especially in her Wonder Woman pajamas. Adorable.

“Thanks, Daisy. Your dad put my bag in the guest room at his place.”

Colt had a kickass, renovated warehouse. I’d only gotten a glimpse of it, but it rocked the industrial vibe with brick walls and concrete floors. He didn’t have much furniture, though. It had a very spare, empty look that was less Scandi style and more ascetic monk. It said “man lives here,” which was the complete opposite look to the adjoining house we were currently in.
