I knew the Fury brothers owned this entire block of the Warehouse District. They had their own warehouses and businesses, but this house in the center was a home. It was done in light, airy tones, with a huge couch and large kitchen. There were loads of pretty house plants, which I assumed were thanks to Lola. I knew for a fact Colt wouldn’t keep a plant alive. Daisy’s room was upstairs, and Lola’s. The building was connected to Colt’s warehouse, and was within easy reach for the other brothers.

My brain suddenly did a U-turn, reliving watching that arm reaching through the broken door, the man in black coming after me.

My heart started pounding again, and a wave of dizziness washed over me. I knew I was breathing too fast. I stumbled to the couch and dropped down.

“Macy? Daddy, something’s wrong with Macy.”

The couch dipped. I felt the big body beside me, and strong hands cupped my face.

“Macy, look at me.”

I did. I loved looking at that masculine face, and those blue eyes that made me think of the palest sea glass.

“Breathe,” he ordered.

I pulled in some air.

“There you go. Good girl. Slow it down.” His thumb stroked along my cheekbones. “You’re safe. Say it.”

“I’m…safe.”

With his solid, secure presence beside me, I felt the fear and panic recede. Daisy pushed into my other side, burrowing into me.

I fought a smile. Surrounded by father and daughter, both doing their best to comfort me. I stroked a hand over Daisy’s hair. “I’m feeling better now.” I met Colt’s gaze. “Thanks.”

He nodded. When he shifted away, I felt the loss of his body acutely.

“Dai, time for bed.”

The little girl’s head jerked up. “But—”

“I know it’s exciting having Macy here, but she’ll be here in the morning. Bedtime.”

“But Daddy—”

“Daisy.” His tone turned firm.

I found this fascinating. Colt in dad mode.

The little girl huffed out a breath. “Fine.”

I hid a smile. Seven going on seventeen.

“Say good night to Macy.”

“Night, Macy.” Daisy threw her arms around my neck. “Have a good sleep. My daddy will be right beside you. He’ll keep you safe.”

My eyes flew to Colt.

“Right beside you in the bedroom next to yours,” he clarified.

“Of course.” I squeezed Daisy. “Thanks, gorgeous girl.”

Colt and Daisy headed out, her smaller hand engulfed by one of his big ones. So stinking cute.

I sagged back on the comfy couch and wrapped my arms around myself. I knew the crime in New Orleans was bad. The man who’d broken into my place must have just been some opportunistic thief. He hadn’t been expecting me to be home.

I nibbled my lip. Except that my lights had been on.
