I’d heard about some of Mila’s troubles. She’d overheard something criminal and shady at her old job, which had put her in danger. She’d ended up on the run, and gotten a job as a bartender at Dante’s club.

And ended up in Dante’s arms and in love.

I sipped my beer and watched the pair. Dante looked at Mila like she was precious.

Mila caught his look and smiled. He dropped a kiss to her shoulder.

My belly did a funny flip-flop. Yep, I was jealous as hell. Having a man like Dante Fury clearly adore you… I fiddled with the label on my bottle, and because I couldn’t stop myself, I glanced at Colt.

My heart jolted. He was looking at me.

“It was a hot one today.” Mila opened a bottle of whiskey. “We’ll probably get a storm later.” She expertly started mixing the cocktails.

“No flaming cocktails?” Reath asked.

Mila smiled. “Not tonight.”

Dante’s club, Ember, specialized in flaming cocktails.

“Mila’s Smoked Cinnamon is already incredibly popular.” Dante leaned against the island, pride in his voice.

“Macy, would you like a cocktail?” Mila asked. “Sounds like you’ve earned one lately.”

“I’m not a girl to say no to a cocktail. I’d love one.”

A moment later, Mila handed me a glass. She passed others around, and we all tried Mila’s creation. She’d also made mocktail versions for Lola and Daisy.

It was delicious, and I happily gulped the cocktail down.

Soon, Lola corralled everyone to the table, and I enjoyed the good food, good drinks, and good conversation. There was no end of banter and teasing from the men. I felt a warm glow. I’d never had this. A big family gathering. A sense of being part of a tight-knit group.

It had just been mom and me. It’d been wonderful, but I hadn’t realized until now that maybe we’d been missing out on something. That having people, laying down roots, wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“Okay?” Colt slid an arm across the back of my chair.

I breathed in his citrus-lime scent and nodded. I felt him toy with my hair as he turned to keep talking with Kav.

“They can be a hit to the senses.”

I glanced at Mila who was sitting on the other side of me.

“You’ve got that right.”

Mila smiled, but it faded. “I’m sorry to hear about your ex causing you trouble.”

My good mood soured a little. “Thanks. I’m hoping he loses interest soon.”

She touched my hand. “You can trust Colt, and his brothers. They all had my back.” She looked over at Dante and I saw love in her eyes. “Ending up here was the best thing that happened to me.”

“I’m glad for you, Mila.”

She squeezed my fingers. “You’ll get there, too.” She looked at Colt. “I mean, you’ll be safe.”

I nodded.

“Daddy, can we go in the pool?” Daisy asked.

“Pool?” I loved to swim. “I didn’t know you had a pool.”
