“There’s one on the rooftop of Colt’s warehouse,” Reath said.

“Maybe later, short stuff,” Colt told his daughter.

Lola rose from her chair. “Let’s have dessert, before we do anything else.”

I sat there, absorbing it all. The camaraderie, Daisy’s funny comments, the warmth of Colt’s body close to mine.

I knew it wouldn’t last. Life changed constantly, people came and went. But I would enjoy it while I could.

“Okay, thanks, Matt. If you come across anything else, let me know.”

Ending the call, I leaned back in my office chair. It was Monday morning. Daisy was out shopping for new shoes with Lola. I was chasing some leads on Scott Warner.

I flicked through my cell phone until I reached a photo of the fucker. He was smiling, buff in that way you got in the gym. He was good-looking, and I hated that. I bet the guy couldn’t win a fight to save his life.

Maybe the only time he liked swinging a punch was at a woman half his size.

I heard Macy out in the front office on the phone. She sounded happy. We’d had a quiet Sunday. We’d taken Daisy to the aquarium. My girl loved fish. I knew if she couldn’t con me into a dog, she’d switch to begging for a fish.

Despite the simmering tension both Macy and I worked hard to ignore, it had been nice, the three of us out. Daisy holding our hands.

Don’t get used to it, Fury.

I had to stay focused on my daughter.

I rubbed the center of my chest. I also had to stay focused on hunting down Scott Warner.

So far, I wasn’t winning. Scott hadn’t used his credit card, and was lying low like the snake he was. I’d put out feelers, and Reath was looking. Beau was asking around the local gyms.

The asshole would pop up somewhere, and I’d be ready when he did.

In the meantime, it was taking all my control to keep my hands off Macy. Being so close to her was torture, whether we were at the aquarium, watching TV with Daisy, or grilling steaks for dinner.

I’d managed to ignore her sunshiny laugh, her bare legs, and her painted toenails for all of Sunday. I blew out a breath. I just had to keep it that way.

“Hey.” She wandered in, flicking through some papers in her hand. “I have a couple of jobs for you to look over, and a Detective Broussard called while you were on the phone. He said for you to give him a call back when you can.”

Broussard was a cop friend. I took the papers from her.

She fidgeted a little.

“What’s wrong?”

She touched her hair. “Nothing.”

“Macy, just spit it out.”

“Any news on Scott?” She whirled away. “A part of me doesn’t want to know. If I just ignore him, it’s like he doesn’t exist.” She whirled back, her hands waving in the air. “But I know I can’t do that. I have to face my problems.” Her shoulders slumped.

“Don’t cry,” I growled.

“I’m not.” Her voice sounded watery.

“I don’t want to have to make more origami.”
