“Baby, tell me what you need?” I fumbled to get my phone out, holding her tightly. I stabbed at the screen. “Reath! Macy’s down. She can’t breathe. It looks like a reaction to something.”
“Fuck,” my brother bit out. “I’m on my way.”
Heart racing, I stroked her hair. “I’ve got you, Macy. Hold on.” Her gaze locked on mine. I touched her cheek. I hated that wheezing sound of her breath. “That’s it. Focus on me.”
I felt her tense body relax a little, but I could see panic in her eyes.
“A-a-llergic.”
“Okay. Stay calm. I’ll never let anything happen to you.”
Reath burst through the door, a first aid kit in his hand. The one he kept at Phoenix Security Services was better stocked than a hospital. He took one glance at Macy and his jaw tightened. “Anaphylaxis.”
I nodded.
Reath put the kit on the desk and ripped it open. He pulled out an EpiPen and handed it to me.
I yanked the lid off, then jammed the pen against Macy’s thigh.
She jolted.
“There, Macy. You’ll be fine now.” I handed the empty pen to Reath, then pulled her onto my lap.
She buried her face against my shirt.
Soon, I felt her body relax.
“Thank you.” She sounded a little hoarse, but her breathing was already better.
I felt jittery myself, seeing her like that. I pulled her closer. “What happened?”
“This woman came in. Marsha.” Macy’s nose wrinkled. “She’s head of your online fan club.”
“My what?”
Macy’s lips twitched. “She’s a groupie. A bounty hunter groupie.”
I grunted.
“Anyway, she was rude—”
My fingers tightened. “How?”
“It doesn’t matter. She offered me a brownie. She’d made some for you.” Macy waved a hand at her desk. “There must be coconut in there. I’m allergic.”
Reath picked up the container and sniffed. “I don’t see or smell coconut.”
“I know. It’s weird. I always check.”
Something in me stilled.
“She must’ve used coconut oil or something,” Macy said.
“Is that common in brownies?” I asked.
Her brow creased. “I don’t think so.”
“Warner know you’re allergic?”
