Throat tight, I watch the pair keep dancing to a new song, giggling wildly.
I cleared my throat. For now, I had to focus on getting Macy safe. That was the most important thing.
“Hey, that salad isn’t going to make itself,” I called out.
They both spun to face me.
Daisy pulled a face. “I don’t want salad.”
“You’ll eat it, or there’ll be no dessert.”
She huffed. “But it’s so green. It tastes yuck.”
“I like salad,” Macy said.
My little girl turned. “You do?”
“Yes, as long as it has a yummy dressing on it. Vinaigrette, French, Caesar, ranch—”
“I like ranch,” Daisy announced.
“Then we’ll have ranch dressing on our salad tonight.”
Daisy beamed at Macy, and Macy leaned down and whispered something in her ear. Then Daisy kept dancing as Macy headed my way.
Everything inside me tightened. Since Daisy had returned home this morning, Macy had been careful not to touch me.
Meanwhile, my hands were itching to feel her smooth skin again. She was wearing a short blue skirt and white T-shirt, with dangling hoop earrings.
“It looks like you’re pretty good at manning the grill.”
“I’m a half-decent cook, but nowhere in Lola’s territory.”
“No one is in Lola’s territory.”
Macy was close enough that I could smell my shower gel on her, but it smelled different on her skin. Better.
I couldn’t stop myself. I reached out and tugged her to my side. She startled, and shot a glance toward Daisy. “Colt…”
I rested my chin on the top of her head. “I missed holding you.”
