“No, Daddy. It’swrong.”

“You’re going to be late for school.”

I headed over, and Lola gave me a wink.

We’d just eaten breakfast in the main house. I loved the way the sunlight filled the space, and there was a vase of fresh lilies on the island that had to be Lola’s handiwork. I loved Colt’s warehouse too—it was more masculine and moody. A space that I knew was his haven. Where he could be himself.

I reached Daisy and quickly straightened her ponytail, then pulled out the pink ribbon from my own hair.

“Look.” I showed it to her, then tied it in her hair.

She raced to the nearby mirror, arching in a way only kids or contortionists could manage. “It’s pretty.”

“Like you. And I have something else.” I held up the origami flower I’d made her.

“A sunflower.” Daisy took it.

“For luck.” It was bright yellow with some orange folded into the center. “First day back at school used to always make me nervous.”

Daisy blew out a breath. “I’m sad the summer is over.”

I nodded. “I get that. The best thing about summer is that it comes around again.”

She perked up.

“And there are other things to look forward to,” I continued. “The Fall, Halloween, Christmas—”

“And my birthday!”

I ruffled her hair. “Exactly. You need to focus on the positive stuff.”

Her nose wrinkled. “Daddy says to always have a contingency plan.”

I snorted. That sounded exactly like Colt. I flicked a glance at him. He was watching us, a strange look on his face that I couldn’t read.

“Well, that can’t hurt when you’re a bounty hunter. Are you a bounty hunter?”

Daisy giggled. “No.”

“Then maybe worry about contingency plans when you’re older.”

“Time to go,” Lola said. “We don’t want to be late.”

Daisy threw her arms around my waist and my heart melted. I hugged her and patted her back. “Have an awesome day, gorgeous girl.”

“I will.” She raced to Colt, who scooped her up.

“Love you, short stuff.”

“Love you, Daddy.”

Oh, God. It hit me in the solar plexus. That pure love. I turned to the side, trying to get a grip on my emotions.

Lola, who was watching me, smiled. Then she and Daisy hurried out.

I turned to Colt. He looked his usual hot, grumpy self. His jeans hugged his fine ass. Now that we were alone, my thoughts turned very X-rated. My lower belly clenched tight, and instantly I was back by the pool. Feeling him inside me, then coming on me.

After the pool last night, he’d fucked me again in his bed. It had been slower, lazier, but just as hot. And his gaze had been locked on mine as he’d moved inside me. Like he was memorizing every second.
