“Yes.”

“You won’t go anywhere alone—”

“I promise.” I went up on my toes and kissed his jaw. “I’ll be here waiting for you. However long it takes.”

He kissed me, his tongue stealing into my mouth. I held on tight.

“I’ll find this asshole, then I’ll find the asshole who’s after you.”

“Wow, I figured I’d get one of your security guards, not you.”

I made sure the front door of Colt’s warehouse was locked, then turned.

Reath smiled, which I took two seconds to appreciate. Damn, the man was fine.

“I was free.”

We fell into step.

“And if something happened to you, my brother would lose his mind.”

I missed a step, then caught myself. “We’re…it’s not…” I blew out a breath. “It’s casual. We’re just enjoying ourselves.”

Reath’s face didn’t change. “You don’t really believe that.”

“I promised him no complications, and that I’d keep my strings to myself.”

Reath didn’t say a word, but I felt the weight of his gaze. Suddenly I felt like squirming, baring my soul.

Words spilled out of me. “I don’t usually do strings anyway. I like to keep things free, easy, fun.”

“Mmm.”

“God, you don’t say anything, and I feel like you’re pulling out my deepest secrets.” I frowned. “How do you do that?”

“It’s my superpower.”

I made a harrumphing sound. “Were you really a spy?”

“If I tell you, then I’d have to kill you.” He grabbed my arm. We stopped on the corner by Smokehouse, Dante’s bar.

“Macy, I’m no expert on relationships.” He was talking to me, but I saw him scanning the street. Something told me he’d clocked every car, every person, and probably memorized every license plate. “But I think you and Colt need to stop saying the things you usually do, and actually share how you feel.”

Big emotions welled inside me like a balloon. I knew exactly what it was I was feeling. Fear.

I cleared my throat. “Right now, he doesn’t need anything distracting him from catching the bad guy. Badguys,if you count both Cullen and Scott.”

We started walking again.

I unlocked the office and headed for my desk. I stashed my handbag in the drawer. I had to admit, the short commute to work rocked.

Reath disappeared into Colt’s office and I heard a cellphone ring. When I heard a low murmur, I knew he was on the phone.

I got to work and checked my email first. I deleted all the spam. Ugh, I swear the spam emails multiplied. Didn’t people have better things to do with their time than send spam? I wondered how Colt was doing. Wayne Cullen targeted women, but he was dangerous to everyone.
