We had to bring Daisy home.

When I reemerged, the rest of the Fury brothers had arrived. Dante, clearly recently out of bed, was drinking coffee, his hair tousled. Kavner was in a suit. Reath stood by the island, hip hitched against the stone.

“Warner left this note on my truck. I thought he had Macy, but he meant Daisy.” Colt dropped the paper onto the island. Then he snatched up an empty glass and threw it. It smashed against the wall.

Insides roiling, I sat on the couch. No one paid me any attention.

“My guys are pulling CCTV around the school,” Reath said.

I curled my legs up. I was so cold. I prayed that Daisy was okay. I hated feeling this useless.

Colt’s cellphone rang and he answered it in a flash. “Lola? Okay.” He closed his eyes. “Got it. Yeah, I’ll find her and bring her home.”

When he opened his eyes, they were empty. Like he’d shut down.

“One of Daisy’s friends said she saw a man take Daisy. She was fighting him.”

“Fuck,” Dante said.

Reath opened a laptop. “My team has footage.”

The men crowded around the screen.

“It’s not a good angle,” Kav said.

“That’s Warner. Fuck.” Colt spun, his hands pressed to the back of his neck. His jaw was locked.

I wanted to soothe him. If not take away his pain, at least share it.

I rose and walked over. “Colt?” I touched his arm.

He didn’t pull away, but he didn’t come any closer. His body was tense under my fingers.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “So sorry.”

“I should have considered this.” His stare was blank, like he didn’t even see me. “I should’ve had security on her.”

“I didn’t believe Scott was capable of this.”

A muscle ticked in Colt’s jaw. “The asshole you dated is dangerous. To everyone.”

I let my hand drop. I felt about an inch high. Colt was right. I should’ve seen it. How could I not have seen it?

The men talked, strategizing. It flowed past me, and I felt shut out.

Reath was talking about possible locations Scott could be using. His team was searching traffic cams around the school.

I moved back to the couch, and tried to hold it together. I wished there was something I could do.

The couch moved, and I woodenly looked up.

Kavner was watching me with a sympathetic gaze. “How are you holding up?”

“It’s not me who matters, it’s Daisy.” I glanced over at Colt. He hadn’t once looked my way. It was like he’d forgotten I existed.

He blamed me. How could he not? I blamed myself.

“Look, when Colt gets worried, he gets in this zone. He locks down his feelings.”
