I swallowed. “I understand.”

“I don’t think you do. His father killed his mom.”

“I know.”

Kav looked surprised for a second. “Did you know he heard it all? He was hiding in a closet, and heard every shout and scream.”

Oh, God.

“He blamed himself.”

“He was achild.”

“Doesn’t matter to him. Then his sister’s death just compounded it. He felt like he’d failed her.”

“I’ve seen the way he drives himself to protect others. Especially Daisy.”

Kav touched my hand, and I saw him frown. He could probably feel how cold my fingers were.

“I know he’s afraid to lose the people he cares about,” I said. “Like he did Chrissy.”

Kav nodded, still frowning at me.

“He can’t lose Daisy, Kavner.”

“He won’t. He has us, and we’ll find her.”

“He’s lucky to have brothers like you.” Someone to be there for him, no questions asked.

Kav tipped my chin up. “And he has you.”

I looked at Colt’s stiff back. He was leaning over the computer on the island. “I don’t think he wants me right now. It’s my fault Daisy is in danger.”

“No, it’s not.” Kav’s voice was sharp. “He’s locked down, Macy, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. He isn’t used to having a woman, one he cares about. And it sure as hell doesn’t mean he blames you. You aren’t to blame for anything. Scott Warner did this. He’s to blame.”

I just stared at him.

“We found Warner’s vehicle,” Reath said.

“Got an address?” Colt barked. I saw him check his handgun and tuck it at his lower back.

“Yes,” Reath replied.

“Let’s go and get my daughter.”

He strode to the stairs, and didn’t look at me once.

My heart shriveled. Maybe my mom was right, after all. Maybe it was better to stay alone.

Kav rose. “We’ll get Daisy back. It’s going to be fine.”

I managed a nod. “Yes. She’ll be home. Safe.”

All that mattered was that Daisy came home safely.

As the men all left, and I was standing there alone, an idea formed.

Maybe there was something I could do to bring Colt’s daughter home.
