Outside, I set the bag of muffins in the basket of my bike and set off.

I hadn’t gone far down the street when I heard the roar of an engine. I glanced back over my shoulder and my pulse spiked. A big, dark truck was gunning down the street. He was going too fast, and he was too close to the edge of the road.

The asshole was going to crowd me.

I gripped the handlebars and edged over as far as I could.

“Move over, asshole,” I muttered.

He roared past and knocked me.

The world spun. I went flying, and hit the pavement between two parked cars.

I felt a sting on my elbows, and the air was knocked out of me. My butt throbbed, having taken the brunt of my impact.

My bike! I could see the front tire was bent.

Dismay, fear, and anger churned inside me. I just sat there, stunned.

“Macy!”

Dean and Raven raced out of the coffee shop.

“Are you all right?” Dean said.

“My bike… There was a truck…”

“I saw the dick. He was going too fast.” Dean helped me onto the sidewalk, and Raven rescued my damaged bike.

I felt shaky now.

Dean shook his head. “You could’ve been seriously hurt.”

“Is there someone we should call?” Raven asked.

My hand shook as I pulled my phone out of my pocket. “I’ll call him.” I blew out a breath.

I was all right. I wasn’t hurt. Everything was fine.

I swiped the screen and called Colt.

COLT

Finishing a phone call, I leaned back in my office chair. I’d had an old, battered, brown leather one for years, that always creaked like hell. Two months back, while I was away on a job, Macy had donated the damn thing and gotten me a new, black, ergonomic one.

I’d yelled. She’d rolled her eyes.

“Your back will thank me, big guy.”

Later that day, I’d found one of her bloody origami bears—with claws raised and a scowl drawn on it—in the center of my desk.

This new chair was the most comfortable thing I’ve ever sat in. Not that I’d ever tell her that.

I wondered where the hell she was. She wasn’t usually late. She had the annoying habit of being constantly early.

No doubt she’d skip in shortly, after riding that ridiculous green bike of hers, wearing some outfit that made it impossible not to look at her and wonder…things.
