He hit me hard. We fell, both sprawled on the floor, and pain vibrated through me. I tried to turn, but he pinned me to the ground. A slap to the face stunned me. It hurt. Badly.

Dazed, I blinked up at him. He backhanded me again.

Then he caressed my cheek. “I do love you, Macy. You’ll learn. I’ll teach you.”

I tasted blood in my mouth. “You have no idea what real love is.”

He sneered. “You think you love that fucker you work for?”

“I do.” I was afraid, but I let what I felt for Colt fill me.

And I hoped, despite everything, that he’d come for me.

I was tired of having no one.

Scott leaned down, his face an inch from mine, like he was going to kiss me. I turned my head to the side.

“I’ll make you forget him.” Then Scott’s weight pushed off me.

Hope flared, and I tensed, ready to run.

But Scott sank a hand into my hair, and another twisted in my shirt.

“We’re leaving. You’ll forget this fucking city, and Fury.”

He dragged me across the floor.

I kicked and struggled. I couldn’t let him get me into a car. I knew if he got away with me, I’d never see Colt again.

I turned my head and sank my teeth into Scott’s calf. He yelped and shook me.

“Do that again, and I’ll kill you.” His tone was like ice.

He was a monster.

Then he pulled a gun from the waistband of his pants, and my heart stopped.

COLT

Closing the distance to the house, I tried to find some control. A cool head.

But I couldn’t.

Daisy was safe, but I knew Scott Warner would definitely hurt Macy.

I also knew my sunflower would fight him.

I stalked past the For Sale sign, and saw that the front door was ajar. Then from inside, I heard Macy cry out.

Boone grabbed my arm. “Steady. She needs you thinking, not getting yourself killed.”

I nodded, and dragged in a deep breath, but I wasn’t waiting any longer.

I moved silently up onto the porch. Boone was quiet behind me. He’d been trained. My brothers and I had learned to sneak around at a young age. Sometimes avoiding a beating had depended on it.

I peeked in the front window.
