I suck in a sharp breath, but it’s like my throat is closed, and the air can’t reach my lungs. All noise falls into the backgroundas I stare at him from across the room. My hands shake, palms clammy with nerves.

It can’t be.My fingers tighten around the stem of the glass in my hand as I just stare, completely in shock. This can’t be possible.

Time seems to slow down as we just watch one another, neither of us breaking the contact as the air fills with tension. I blink and then blink once again, but he’s still here. Standing just mere feet away from me.

Three years.

It’s been three years since I last saw Miguel Fernandez.

Three years since he broke my heart, and I haven’t seen or talked about him since. I couldn’t. It just hurt too much.

But even the time and distance didn’t make this ache dull in the slightest. All those feelings that I’ve been shoving to the back of my mind, locking them in a box, hoping they’ll disappear, are back, front and center, with just one glance at him. As is the pain. That twisted, searing pain seems to be tearing me in two.

“Becky?” A hand lands on my shoulder, startling me. “Are you okay?”

From the corner of my eye, I can see Nico watching me with a worried gaze.

I shake my head silently.

No, I wasn’t okay.

Whatever he must see on my face has him looking around, trying to find the cause of my distress, and I know the exact moment when he sees him.

“Shit, is that Fernandez?” Nico asks as my gaze moves back to the man in question.

And he’s still there.

Shit indeed.

“Who’s that?” Savannah asks, the curiosity evident in her voice.

One of the biggest advantages of hanging out with Savannah, except of how amazing she is, is that she didn’t know me in high school. She didn’t know the Becky from before. She didn’t give me wary looks. She didn’t watch me like I was broken. To her, I was just Becky. And I liked it that way, but I guess that is gone now.

Savannah’s probing gaze lands on me. “Are you okay, Becs? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

More like a living nightmare.

“That’s Miguel,” Nico explains. “He and Becky used to date in high school.”

Savannah’s brows shoot up in surprise. “Really?”

Just then, Miguel slides from his stool and starts to walk toward us.

Fuck.

I grab my bag and jump to my feet. “I’m sorry, Sav, but I have to go. I can’t stay here right now. I’ll call you later.”

Not waiting for her answer, I go straight toward the door. She calls my name, but I don’t look back. I can’t.

Pushing through the crowd, my eyes are firmly set on the door—my escape.

The warm air hits me in the face the moment I shove through the door and stumble outside.

My heart is beating a mile a minute, my breaths coming out in harsh pants as I all but run toward my car, grateful that I have on my chucks. I’m just unlocking my trusty old truck when I hear the door bang open, laughter spilling from the bar out into the quiet night.

“Rebecca!”

The hairs at the back of my neck rise at the sound of my name coming from his mouth.
