Even pale and with bags under her eyes, there was just something so radiant about Kate in her wedding dress. The dress was made for her, and I knew she would look stunning on her wedding day. Not that Emmett would care one bit either way. Kate was his whole world. He was so goddamn in love with her he would have married her in her PJs with messy hair and no makeup while they sat in their living room. But wearing that dress? He’ll be a goner.

“The only question is, how quickly will he start to cry.”

Her eyes meet mine in the mirror. “Oh, shut up. He won’t cry.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” I sing-song. “Wanna place a bet?”

“I’m not betting against my fiancé!”

“You’re no fun.” I slide my hand around her waist. “I mean it, though. He’s one lucky guy to have you.”

A soft expression passes over her face as she leans her head against my shoulder. “I’m the lucky one to get all of you. And to think I thought it would be Penny and me forever, and now we have this big, nosy town all having our backs.” Her eyes mist, and she sniffles softly.

“Hey.” I turn around, poking her gently in the side. “No crying.”

Kate tilts her head back, sliding her finger under her eyes. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’ve been a mess lately.”

“You’re about to marry the love of your life while setting up your business and future, all while you were sick. It’s normal that you’re overwhelmed.”

“I know, but my mood swings have been all over the place, and I hate it. I’m not a crier.”

“No, you’re not, but every girl needs a break occasionally. How about you take that dress off before you get it all wet?”

With the help of the attendant, we get Kate out of her dress, after which I try my own gown. Happy with the final result, we wait for the woman to pack our dresses in bags and get out of there.

I listen to Kate tell me about dress shopping with her aunt, Penny, and Mrs. Santiago as we make our way back to her place. Kate insisted that she wanted her dress to be a surprise for everybody, so she only asked me to come dress shopping with her.

Later on, Kate admitted that the pressure from her aunt and Mrs. Santiago was getting to her, and while she didn’t mind giving in too much when it came to the party, she wanted to choose the dress for herself. So the two of us went shoppingalone, but that meant that Kate also had to go shopping with her family, too.

Kate’s phone rings as we get out of the car at her house. I go toward the back seat, pulling out the bags with dresses, when I overhear Kate’s side of the conversation.

“Right now?” She chews on her lip as she listens intently to whatever the other person is saying. “Yeah, of course. I understand. Okay, I’ll be there.”

With a goodbye, she hangs up and runs her hand through her hair, letting out a long breath.

“Is everything okay?”

Kate jumps a little at my question before turning around to face me. “No, well, yes, but I have to go and take care of something.” Her gaze falls on the bags. “Can you take those upstairs to the guest room? Just make sure to lock the door.” She pulls the key out of her purse and hands it to me. “I wouldn’t put it past Emmett to go snooping around.”

I let out a strangled laugh. “You know it. Anything else? When are your college friends coming?”

“Their plane will land in a couple of hours. I hope this won’t take too long, and I’ll have enough time to set everything up.”

“What do you need to do? I can help.”

“Really? I’ve already put so much on you.”

“That’s what maids of honor are for. Spill.”

I listen carefully as Kate tells me everything that needs to be done before the party tonight, already mentally cataloging where to start.

“Shit, I really need to go. Will you be okay?”

“Perfect, don’t worry about anything.”

“You’re the best.” With a quick hug, Kate dashes for the car. “You know where the front door key is, right?”

“Yeah, yeah.” I wave her off.
