“What are you…”

I suck in a breath as my ass brushes against him, his hard length nestling between my cheeks.

“Oh…” I look over my shoulder, my lips parting in surprise. Miguel’s gaze falls on my mouth, and he curses quietly.

The next thing I know, he’s running with me in his arms, and before I manage to grasp what’s happening, we’re airborne. My hands clasp around him tighter as we fall into the lake with a big splash. The cold water is a shock to my system. A shudder goes through me, but strong, warm hands don’t let go of me.

Together, we swim to the surface. My hair plasters to my face as I suck in a long breath, kicking my legs so I can stay afloat.

“Are you crazy?” I push my hair back and turn around to face him.

“What?” Miguel laughs. “It was getting hot out there.”

“I’ll give you hot.” I push him back, his laughter following after me as I swim to the shore and get out of the water.

“What was that about?” Kate joins me.

Shit. I knew this would happen. I will kill him.

Plastering an innocent smile on my lips, I grab my towel from the chair and wrap it around my shoulders. “What?”

She narrows her eyes on me. “You and Miguel?”

“Oh, he was baiting me about the game.” I shrug, trying to play it off, but if it’s based on the skepticism dripping from Kate’s every word, she’s not buying it.

“More like he was all over you since the game started.”

The moment I get my hands on him…

“You’re imagining things.” I shake my head. “Can we talk about something else? I actually wanted to see what you think about the setup for tomorrow.” I point at both sides of the pier. “I was thinking of placing the chairs here, and then…”

Kate shifts her attention to what I’m describing, nodding her head and giving a few of her own ideas. Her friends and Penelope joined us halfway through our discussion and offered to come tomorrow morning to help me with the setup.

Thankfully, none of them mention Miguel again.

Problem solved, at least for now.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

MIGUEL

“So, Miguel, do you have your speech prepared for tomorrow?” Timothy asks once we’re chilling on the deck after dinner, the bonfire crackling brightly in the night, just like in the good old days.

“Yeah, what did you prepare? You know that’s the most important part of the evening,” Jamie chimes in when the balled up napkin hits him in the head. “Ouch! What was that for?”

“What most important part of the evening?” Emmett grumbles. “The most important part of tomorrow will be putting a ring on my fiancé and finally being allowed to call her my wife.”

Guys start laughing. “You’re such a sap, Santiago,” Nixon chuckles.

“Says the guy who had us organize an impromptu wedding just a few days after he asked his girlfriend to marry him because he didn’t want to wait.”

“Touché.” Nixon lifts his beer, a smile curling his lips. “But I get to call her my wife.”

They continue talking about their girlfriends and wives, and I can’t miss the fact that they look so… happy. More than that, they look content. Like they’ve finally found their place in life, and it was next to these women. Nixon and Timothy were married, and now Emmett was about to get married, while Hayden was in a committed relationship.

Everybody was settling down—finishing their degrees, getting married, having kids. I did that too. Well, partly, and yet, the longer I was here, surrounded by my friends, the more unsettled I was feeling. Like I was missing an intrinsic part of me.

The laughter coming from the house draws my attention. Rebecca ushered the girls into the living room once we were done with dinner for what she called a bridal shower. I had no idea what it entailed, but they’ve been there for the last hour, if not longer.
