I watch the brightly lit room momentarily, my mind swirling with different emotions, most of which I’m not sure I want to name. All I know was that my feet were bouncing with nerves, and I was feeling restless.

Before I can overthink it, I stand up.

“I’m off to take a leak,” I say to no one in particular.

Maybe if I stretched my legs, some of this pent-up tension would leave my body.

“If I were you, I’d make sure to stay away from the bride because if she finds out…”

“If the bride finds out what?” Kate asks, joining us with the rest of the girls.

I scan over the group, holding my breath as I wait to see familiar red head, but she’s not here.

Did she leave already?

“That I’m going to use the bathroom,” I say quickly, shooting Timothy a death glare as his wife sits onto his lap, his arms slipping protectively around her middle. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

Thankfully, they’re too distracted with theirsignificant others to pay me much attention. I walk toward the house and suddenly spot two figures standing on the back porch. The dim light coming from the living room gives just enough visibility to recognize the people standing there.

Rebecca and Nico.

I come to a stop, my fingers clenching into fists as I watch from the darkness the two of them talk, that restless feeling I’ve been fighting all day long becoming even stronger now. I try to listen in on their conversation, but their voices are too soft for me to discern what they’re talking about.

The blood rushing through my veins echoes in my eardrums as I watch them together for what feels like forever. Seriously, what do they have to talk so much about? Then he leans in, his arms wrapping around Rebecca’s shoulders as he pulls her into a hug.

I swear the moment lasts for an eternity before he finally lets go.

Thank fuck.

Then he descends the stairs, and I move out of the way so he misses me standing there. Only when he’s far enough away do I get out of the shadows, my gaze finding Rebecca still standing on the porch, her phone on her ear.

I move closer, overhearing the conversation.

“I’m not checking in on you,” she lets out a sigh, followed by a short pause, “I just wanted to make sure everything is okay, that’s it.” Another pause. “Fine, I’ll go back to my friends. You try not to party too hard. God forbid you have fun.”

Hanging up the call, she shakes her head and mutters to herself, “He’ll be the death of me.”

Slipping the phone into her bag, she lets it drop on the table before leaning her palms against the railing. I watch her observe the sky and just take her in.

The contemplative expression on her face.

The way the moonlight makes the red in her hair stand out.

The curve of her mouth as she chews on her bottom lip.

Pushing back, she gets off the porch.

I step in front of her just as she looks up, her lips parting in surprise. Reaching forward, my fingers wrap around her wrist. I look around, making sure we’re alone before I pull her toward the side of the house and the trees nearby.

“Miguel!” Rebecca hisses softly once we’re far enough from the house. “What are you doing?”

“We’re going to talk,” I say evenly, looking around us. Content with the spot, I turn to face her.

“Are you cra—”

“What the hell did Mr. Good and Reliable Guy want this time around?” I cut her off, the irritation that’s been building since I got back to Bluebonnet finally boiling over.

“Excuse me?” She pulls her hand out of my grasp, her fingers wrapping around her wrist and rubbing at the skin.
