Was this crazy? Were we crazy?

While a part of me felt satiated, the other part of me wanted to rush after her, grab her hand, and take her somewhere where it would be just the two of us and never let her go.

Tilting my head back, I rub my hand over my face, pinching the bridge of my nose. I could still smell her on my hand. Still feel how she gripped me so tightly, like she never wanted to let me go.

“Fuck.”

How the hell was I supposed to go back to our friends now and pretend nothing happened? Pretend I wasn’t just minutes ago buried so deep inside her that you wouldn’t be able to tell where one of us ended and the other one began?

Shaking my head, I try to push the thoughts out of my mind. Joining our friends with a dick tenting my swim trunks won’t help one bit.

Figuring I’ve given her enough time, I go after her. The closer I move to the clearing, the louder the music is, and so is the light. I lift my gaze as I step into the backyard, only to find Rebecca standing there. Her back is to me, so she doesn’t notice me, but Kate does.

She slowly shifts her attention over Rebecca’s shoulder. Her brows rise, the corner of her mouth twitching as she glances from me to Rebecca and back. “Well, hello, Miguel. We were just wondering where you two were.”

Shit.

We were so fucking caught.

Plastering a neutral expression on my face, I lift my shoulder. “I went to take a leak.”

Kate smirks knowingly. “In the woods?”

“Yeah, the bathroom was occupied.”

“Mhmmm, the bathroom was occupied,” Kate repeats. “Funny how I didn’t see either of you here a few minutes ago when I came to use the bathroom.”

“You’re imagining things, Kate.” Rebecca shakes her head. “I’m off to grab something to drink.”

My gaze is glued to her back as she all but runs toward the rest of our group. When I turn around, I find Kate watching me intently. “You better know what you’re doing, Fernandez, because if you break her heart…”

With one last warning glare, she follows after her best friend.

I could understand her worry, but there was no need for it.

We both knew what we were getting into and what the stakes were.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

REBECCA

“You look like shit.”

I jump at the sound of my brother’s soft voice and turn to find him standing in the doorway. For a man who was a six-foot-five wall of pure muscle with a ginormous dog standing by his side, they moved like two ghosts.

“You scared me. What are you doing up?”

Chase’s brows pull together as his eyes zero in on my mouth, his head tilted just right so the ear on which he hears better is turned toward me.

Chase lets out a grunt, his shoulder shrugging. “The better question is, what are you doing up? You didn’t come home until two.”

Meaning he was probably up because he couldn’t sleep. Again. But then, I had the exact same problem, although for vastly different reasons.

“There is a lot that has to be done before the ceremony, so I’m going out there to help.”

I look over his shoulder toward the quiet hallway before returning my attention to Chase. “Will you guys be okay?”

These past few days, I felt like I was barely present, and Ihated it. Chase wasn’t still fully healed, and Mom was… Well, Mom. She was lost in her own mind more often than not.
