She nods and lets out a shaky breath. “I’m ready.”

I hold the bag while Miss Adams unzips it and pulls out the dress. Tears glisten in her eyes as she takes it in for the very first time.

“Kate, this is beautiful.”

Between the two of us, we helped Kate get into the dress and slip all the little buttons in place. All the while, I could hear the familiarclickingof the shutters as Jade, another of Kate’s Blairwood friends, took the photos.

Once we’re done, I take a step back and almost bump into Penny. “I’m sorry, Pens.”

“No worries.”

Kate turns around and takes in her sister, grabbing her hands to pull her closer. “You look beautiful, Penny.”

“Well, you’re the one who needs to look beautiful today, not me,” Penny lets out a soft chuckle as Kate places her hands on her waist, letting her feel the delicate design of the lace.

“Oh, she looks stunning. All eyes will be on her today,” I chime in, flashing a knowing smile at my best friend.

“The dress is beautiful, just like I wanted it to be. And the hairdresser and makeup artist did an amazing job. They put my hair in a low bun and added that hairpiece you found,” Kate explains.

Penelope tilts her head to the side, her fingers skimming over the delicate lace of Kate’s dress, trying to imagine how it might look.

“Do you like it?”

“I love it.”

“Emmett is going to flip one way or the other. You could come out in a potato sack, and that man would marry you.”

“Penelope Adams!” Miss Mabel chastises.

“What?” Penelope shrugs, not in the least bit fazed. “It’s true, and you know it. He would still think she’s the most beautiful woman in the world.”

She was totally right about that one. Emmett didn’t care one bit about what Kate would be wearing; he just wanted them to tie the knot already.

Kate leans her head against Penny’s shoulder, letting out a soft sigh. “He’s the best.”

The shutter keeps going off in the background, capturing the moment, but then, there is another knock on the door.

“Who is it?” I ask immediately. “I swear if it’s Emmett, I’ll….”

“Bradley.”

“Oh.” Rushing to the door, I peek outside to make sure Kate’s dad is alone before I let him enter.

I move to the side as I watch Kate share this moment with her family, that vice grip squeezing around my heart as I fight with the little green devil sitting on my shoulder.

Instead, I try to focus on practical things. I take Kate in, making sure every hair is in place, that her makeup is impeccable, and that her dress is spotless.

Only then do I brush my hand against her elbow. “I’ll walk with Penny downstairs.”

Kate smiles at me. “Thanks, Becky.”

Nodding, I wait for Penny to give Henry the command. Together, we descend the stairs, and I grab the harness I’ve decorated earlier. Everybody was dressing up, so of course, we had to do the same for him.

“You two look absolutely adorable,” I tell her as I make sure everything is tied properly. “Are you nervous?”

“Thank you. And a little bit,” she admits. “Hopefully, I won’t have a blind-girl moment out in front of all the guests.”

“You wanna walk it once again? We have time.”
