Penny shakes her head. “No, we’ll be good.” She rubs Henry’s fur as we stop just before the door leading to the back porch. “Right, Henry?”

The dog licks her palm reassuringly.

Soon enough, Kate and Bradley join us, and it doesn’t take long for the music to start. Penny sucks in a long breath as she lifts her chin and gives Henry the command to move forward.

“What’s going on with you?” I ask softly.

Kate pulls her gaze from her sister. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean,” I give her a pointed look. “Didyou seriously think I didn’t notice you sneaking out to the bathroom earlier today?”

“What?” she turns her attention back to Penelope, but I don’t miss the flash of panic on her face.

“And twice last night at the party,” I point out.

“So what?” She shrugs, trying to play it off. But she’s still avoiding my gaze. “I’m nervous.”

Who was she trying to fool?

“Nervous to marry the love of your life who treats you like a freaking princess? Yeah, right. Try again.”

“It’s not the wedding. It’s the fact that I’ll be the center of attention.” She gives me a little push as the music changes. “That’s you.”

My eyes narrow slightly. “We’re not done, missy.”

I clasp my hands tightly around the bouquet of flowers as I make my way down the makeshift aisle. The nerves hit me the moment I step in front of everyone. I’m not sure why because I already know the majority of them. Hell, they’re not even here for me!

Still, my stomach didn’t get the memo because I could feel it roll uncomfortably.

Get a grip, Becky. It’s just a quick walk down the aisle among people you already know.

I put one leg in front of the other, my whole focus on the destination in front of me. Which turns out to be a bad idea because my eyes land on Miguel, whose gaze is already locked on me. The intensity in his eyes makes the knot in my throat tighten.

God, he looks so gorgeous; it should be illegal.

If he dressed like this for his games, I was surprised some city girl didn’t already snatch him because that man definitely knew how to fill a suit.

The dark material is stretched over his broad shoulders, thecrisp white shirt tucked into the waistband of the slacks that hug those powerful thighs, with a tie neatly wrapped around his neck.

The tie I helped Kate pick out for the best man.

My throat bobs as I swallow.

I know I should look away—the last thing I needed was for somebody to catch what was going on—but I couldn’t do it. It’s like those dark eyes held me hostage, and I couldn’t avert my gaze even if I tried.

So, instead, my fingers grip firmly around the flowers as I move closer with each step.

After all, where was I supposed to look? He was the best man, and I was the maid of honor. That was all there was to it.

So why did it feel like my skin was burning under his gaze? Why did I want to squeeze my thighs together to alleviate some of the ache building inside my core?

I wanted this man, true. But simultaneously, I was afraid of the feelings he evoked in me.

He unsettled me, unnerved me to my very core. I had a feeling I would regret what was happening, but did it change anything? No. Because, just like he said, we were inevitable, and fighting this attraction between us was futile.

I could only hope that I’d come out of this whole thing unscathed.
