MIGUEL

Fuck, she’s still the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

It takes everything in me to keep a straight face as I watch Rebecca walk down the aisle. My stomach is wound up tight as I watch her move. Effortlessly like a fucking mirage.

Rebecca is wearing a golden dress that compliments her auburn hair. The material seems to shimmer in the late afternoon light as she glides down the aisle. Thin straps cover her shoulders and go into a heart-shaped bodice. The dress is hugging her every curve and falling all the way to the ground. There is a slit on the side, her leg peeking with each step she takes and shoving off fuck-me red heels. Heels I wanted to feel digging into my back as I got her all to myself once we were done here.

“That, my friend, is what you lost when you walked away.” Emmett smirks. So much for being my best friend and taking my side.

A soft grunt is my only response, which only makes him chuckle harder.

Could I blame him, though? The whole situation was messed up. The three of us have been best friends since we werekids. I wouldn’t want him to abandon Rebecca any more than she wanted to get in between the two of us.

That was the worst part of losing Rebecca. Not only did I lose my girlfriend, I lost my best friend.

But she’s yours now.

Not entirely. I wasn’t sure what we were or what would happen, but I knew I couldn’t say no to her.

I loved her even before I fellin lovewith her. She had me wrapped around her finger, completely enticed, and I was starting to wonder if that was ever going to change. Will there ever be a woman I’d feel more for? Any woman that could ever top my feelings for Rebecca Williams? Did I even want there to be one?

The thoughts swirling through my mind make my head spin, so I push them to the back of my mind.

My gaze is glued to her as she makes her way down the aisle and takes her spot opposite me. The music changes, and I can hear people stand up and see Emmett’s attention shift toward the front to watch his bride. From the corner of my eye, I catch the look of wonder and love, so much love, shining on his face. But even that doesn’t stop me from staring at Rebecca over my best friend’s shoulder.

Because while everybody else has eyes for the bride and groom, I can’t stop staring at the woman standing across from me.

The ceremony passes in a blur. I don’t hear half the things the minister says, barely catching the moment when I have to give them the rings.

Rebecca shakes her head almost imperceptibly, but I can see the corner of her mouth twitch upward. I zero in on that movement before returning my gaze to hers, and I’m pretty sure she can see all the dirty things I wanna do to her once this whole thing is over because a slight flush spreads over hercheeks.

“I now pronounce you man and wife, yo—”

Before the minister can even finish, Emmett pulls his wife to him, his mouth crashing over hers. He dips her back, and people start cheering all around us.

Looking up, I find Rebecca watching our friends, longing flashing on her face. It’s there for a split second before she masks it, but I’ve seen it, and something about it sends a jab of pain going through my chest.

However, I don’t get a chance to think too much about it because soon we’re all swamped by the guests who come to congratulate the newlyweds, and then there are the photos. Tons and tons of pictures. As if the ones taken at Emmett’s before the ceremony weren’t enough. I don’t even get to put my hands on Rebecca in them either because each one of us is standing on the opposite sides as we’re arranged like mannequins by Nixon’s sister Jade as different people come and go.

After more than two hours, Jade finally calls it quits, and we can join the rest of the party for dinner. The whole time I talk with Emmett and Kate, I keep sneaking glances at Rebecca, who’s doing her best to ignore me.

Once the dinner is finished, I rub my hands against the sides of my legs and get to my feet, a glass in hand. “If I can have a moment.”

People settle down, eyes turning toward our table as I clear my throat. “As the maid of honor kindly informed me, and if you know Becky, you know you don’t want to get on her bad side. Trust me. I should know since I’ve done my fair share of doing exactly that.” Soft laughter spreads through the room as I glance at the woman in question. Her brow is raised, her fingers playing with the champagne flute that was placed in front of her. “Anyway, apparently, as the best man, I am expected to give aspeech tonight, so if you’re not in the mood to listen, I suggest you get up and leave.”

“Will you finally get it over with, Fernandez?” Emmett asks, tossing a balled up napkin at me. “I want to go and dance with my wife. Not that you’d know anything about that since your ass is still single.”

This time, people burst into laughter, and I can’t help but join in.

“Oh, now you’ve done it. You know what’s the first thing your golden boy did the moment he saw Katherine here? He fell on his ass, quite literally, and not at all spectacularly. It was just a random August afternoon; we were out on the field practicing when he spotted her. Just as I threw the football at him, it knocked him right in the head, but I guess we’re all lucky he’s got a really thick skull on him, right?” More laughter. I glance at my friend to find him shaking his head at me, so I continue, “Makes one wonder if he’d have fallen so hard so fast if it weren’t for me, so I guess I’m also part of the reason for their love story. Wouldn’t you say?”

Cheering erupts from the crowd, and somebody even whistles, everyone is smiling widely. I see Emmett grab Kate’s hand in his, his finger caressing over the ring he put on her finger.

“I know, I know. I’m the best friend he could have asked for.”

“Oh, I got so lucky with you,” Emmett comments dryly.

“Of course you did. But joking aside, I’ve never seen two people more perfect for each other. Most people are kids when they’re seventeen, and hardly anybody thinks about life outside of high school, but even then, Emmett knew Kate was his future, his life, and he didn’t waiver from his path, not once. He fought for his girl, and he got her in the end.” My gaze goes to Rebecca, and I find her smiling softly. Once again, I can feelthat ache building inside my chest. We stare at one another, but then I remember all the people watching and the promise I made her, so I give my head a little shake and lift my glass, turning back to the crowd. “To Kate and Emmett. To many more years together, filled with love. I wish you all the best, guys.”
