People join in, lifting their glasses in congratulations. I take a sip of my drink as I sit down, and the music starts playing once again.

“You okay?” Emmett asks Kate. “You look a little bit pale?”

I turn toward them, taking Kate in, and he’s right. Even with the makeup, I can see that color drained from her face.

She nods and pushes back her chair, hurrying toward the house. Emmett curses and gets up, but Rebecca’s already on her feet.

“I’ll go make sure she’s okay,” she says, squeezing his shoulder as she walks by.

“Do you think it’s something she ate?” I ask, my gaze still glued to Rebecca’s retreating back.

“Nah, she’s been feeling off for a while now. I thought it was the stress, but now I’m not so sure.”

I turn toward my best friend, noticing the frown etched between his brows. “She’s going to be okay.”

“She has to.” Emmett’s lips press in a tight line, determination clear on his face. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do to make sure she was okay. “She’s my whole fucking world.”

REBECCA

“Kate?” I call out as I run after her into the house. I know where I have to go even before I hear it. The faint sound of somebody throwing up.

Lifting my hand, I knock against the bathroom door. “Kate, are you okay?”

A muffled ‘fine’ comes from the other side of the door, followed by more retching.

“Bullshit,” I shoot back immediately. “What’s really going on? You’re clearly not fine.”

I had a sneaking suspicion about what was happening here. What I couldn’t understand was why she didn’t want to say it. Did she not recognize the signs? Hardly unlikely. Which meant that either she knew it and she tried to ignore it, or she was simply keeping it a secret from me.

“Just had to use the bathroom, that’s all.”

“That’s why you left in such a hurry?” I roll my eyes at the absurdity of it. “Because you had to pee?”

“Yup.”

I open my mouth to call her on it, but the water starts running.

“I don’t believe you,” I yell so she can hear me over the noises, my palm banging against the hardwood. “What’s really going on? This is the second time today you’ve run off like that.”

Either she didn’t hear me, or she chose to ignore me. I have my suspicions, but I decide to play along and wait her out.

“I could say the same,” Kate says as she turns off the water.

Finally.

“Did you see me running away today?”

“No, but I did see the looks you and Miguel were giving each other. When did you start sleeping with him again?”

“W-What?” I croak out, my mouth falling open.

Fuck.

How much did she see? I thought we’d be safe with all the attention on Kate and Emmett, but I guess I was wrong.

“Oh, don’t act like a prude. I know you very well, Rebecca Williams, and you have that recently fucked glow around you.”

“You’re imagining things,” I say immediately. I’m grateful that the door is still closed because I can feel the flush spreading over my cheeks.
