Maybe it was time to let go.

“Dance with me?”

The softly spoken question has the faint hairs at my nape rising. Slowly, I turn around to find Miguel standing next to me, watching me.

This whole day, he has been watching me, his eyes silently telling me things he wanted to do but couldn’t.

I glance around the backyard, but nobody in particular seems to be paying us any attention. Still…

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Something dark passes over his face. “C’mon, Red. It’s one dance between old friends. Nobody will question anything. After all, we’re the maid of honor and best man.”

I knew he was probably right, but that wasn’t what worried me. Not really.

I was scared that if I let him pull me into his arms, I wouldn’t want to leave.

Letting out a soft breath, I nod slowly, giving in. “One dance.”

Extending my hand, I place it into his outstretched palm. A zap of electricity goes through my body as my fingers slide into his, intertwining tightly. Together, we make our way to the dance floor, where he pulls me closer, his hand settling at the small of my back as he starts moving to the gentle beat.

At first, my body is stiff against his, but little by little, I can feel my muscles relax. His warmth seeps through the jacket of his suit, and all I want to do is lean against him. The last few days were chaotic, and now that the wedding was over and everybody seemed to be enjoying the party, the tiredness finally caught up to me.

For a while, we just dance, neither of us saying anything. But that was the thing about Miguel and me. We didn’t need to talk to understand each other. There were countless times when we’d just be together, fingers clasped tightly, my head resting on his shoulder, and it was enough.

“They didn’t have their first dance,” Miguel says, breaking the silence. “Don’t people usually have one of those?”

I hum in agreement. “Kate wanted them to have the last dance. Just the two of them when everybody else leaves.”

She suggested it just a short while ago. At first, I found it strange, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. It felt special and intimate—a moment just for the two of them where they get to unwind and enjoy their day without the curious eyes of everybody on them.

I look around until I find Kate and Emmett dancing together in the middle of the dance floor. His arms are wrapped protectively around her, and I can see his mouth moving as he whispers something in her ear. The love the two of them shared was so strong it was palpable.

Tears burn my eyes, my throat growing tight the longer I stare at them.

“She’s pregnant,” I voice out my suspicion.

I watch as Emmett spins her around gently, and Kate is smiling brightly. It’s like they’re all alone. I’m so damn happy for them. They deserve their happily ever after.

“What?” Miguel asks, pulling back so he can look at me.

Blinking the tears away, I turn my attention to him. “Can you keep your voice down?”

“Not when you drop a bomb like that!” he hisses.

“Well, try to keep your mouth shut, Fernandez.” I jab him in the chest. “She doesn’t want anybody to know. My guess is she hasn’t told Emmett yet.”

“But she told you?”

I shake my head. “She didn’t have to tell me.”

Once again, my eyes find their way to my best friend, who seems to be radiating with happiness despite the fact not that long ago she was throwing up.

She thought she was being sneaky, but it was hard to misshow exhausted she looked in the last few weeks, and then there were her very often disappearances to the bathroom. Coincidence? I think not.

“Just pretend like you’re surprised when they tell you, that’s all.”

Miguel looks at Kate, a frown appearing between his brows. “I don’t get it. She looks completely normal. How can you be sure?”
