“Because I was once in her place, okay?”

“W-what?”

Shit.

The words slipped from my tongue before I could think them through. And if Miguel was surprised at the revelation about Kate, it has nothing on the shock that’s currently reflected on his face.

“Forget I said anything.” I try to pull out of his hold, but he isn’t letting me go.

“You were pregnant?” Miguel slowly repeats as if he can’t wrap his head around the words. Those brown eyes stare at me blankly, his face devoid of any emotion.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting.

Why did I even say it?

I should have kept my mouth shut, but I was tired, and being in his arms felt so familiar, so… safe.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

“It doesn’t matter.” I shake my head, trying to divert the situation. “Let’s just forget I even said anything.”

There was no sense in opening up old wounds. Especially not this wound. Not after all this time.

I start to walk away, but Miguel tugs me back to him. “Like hell.”

“Miguel.”

The previously blank expression is replacedby the fire blazing in his dark eyes. Anger, hurt, and something that looks a lot like jealousy play on his face, each emotion shifting in quick succession.

I should have known he wouldn’t let this go easily. Now that the confession was out in the open, there was no taking it back. He wouldn’t let this go until he got to the bottom of it.

“Don’t you Miguel-me, Rebecca. Not after you just dropped this bomb on me. Pregnant?” he hisses. “You were fucking pregnant? When? When were you pregnant?”

I look around, noticing a few people giving us curious looks. The panic seizes my throat, making it hard to breathe. Taking one deep breath, I try to calm myself. “This isn’t the time nor the place,” I say slowly, trying to keep my cool when all I want to do is run away from here. “If you ruin this for Kate and Emmett, I’ll never forgive you.”

He just watches me for a moment, those dark eyes staring into mine. “Fine,” he grits.

Fine?

I expected him to protest more, but this is good. I didn’t want to cause a scene at the wedding and ruin my friends’ day. And maybe, just maybe, Miguel will forget I said anything.

I should have known better, though. Miguel’s grip on my arm tightens as he starts pulling me away. “Let’s go.”

“Miguel, what are you doing? Where are we going?” I ask, looking around, but we’re already too far gone, and nobody is paying us any attention.

Miguel chooses to ignore me. His full focus is getting the hell out.

Even in the darkness, I can see the hard line of his shoulders and his rigid posture. He was pissed, and there was no way I was getting out of it.

Shit, this shouldn’t have happened.

Why couldn’t I have just kept my mouth shut?

The noises die down a little when we get between the trees next to Emmett and Kate’s house, only slowing down when he’s sure nobody will interrupt us. It was the same place where we were yesterday, only now circumstances were much different.

“When were you pregnant, Rebecca?” He lets my hand drop, turning around so he can face me. The anger reflected on his face has only grown vehement in the last few minutes. His chest is rising and falling rapidly, fingers curled into fists by his side.

An icy chill runs through me, making goosebumps appear on my skin. “Miguel, just let it—”
