Soft music is coming from the kitchen, so I follow the sound, and sure enough, there she is, quietly humming as she grabs a cup of coffee from the counter and takes a sip before she flips the pancake.

Moving into the kitchen, I slide my arm around her middle, pulling her body to me. “Morning,” I whisper, pressing my mouth against the side of her neck.

Fuck, she smells sweet.

Like sugar, chocolate, roses, and everything good in my life.

Rebecca jumps a little in surprise. “Hey, I didn’t hear you come in.”

“That’s because you were too busy singing.”

“I don’t sing,” she protests, turning her attention to the pancake.

“I’d beg to differ.”

I watch as she slides the pancake onto the plate before putting more batter on the pan. My stomach rumbles loudly, making its presence be known.

“You could have woken me up, you know.”

Rebecca shrugs. “It’s fine. I figured you should get some rest after everything that had happened.”

The images of yesterday flash in my mind.

The blue and red lights.

Driving to the hospital.

The heartbreak and fear that were written all over Mom’s face no matter how much she tried to hide it.

Dad’s ashen face, and the way he suddenly seemed so small lying on that hospital bed.

How is it possible that all of that happened only hours ago?

I bury my head deeper into Rebecca’s neck, pushing backthe thoughts of yesterday, and inhale her sweet scent, letting it ground me. “Why would I want rest when I have you?”

Color floods her cheeks, and I know she’s thinking about last night. The way I focused all of my attention on her. On bringing pleasure to her body and losing myself in her velvet heat as I swallowed the noises she made so we wouldn’t wake anybody up.

“I’ll burn breakfast if you don’t stop teasing me,” she chastises, pushing me back.

“That’s fine. I can always have you for breakfast instead.”

She turns to glare at me. “Stop teasing me.”

“Fine.”

Chuckling, I grab her empty cup and search for one of my own, pouring us fresh coffees. Taking a long sip, I lean against the counter, but when I look up, I find Rebecca’s mom standing in the doorway and watching us.

“Mrs. Williams, good morning.” I straighten and give the woman a tentative smile as I take her in.

Rebecca’s mom has adopted me into their family when we were kids, treating me just like she did any of her children. The last few years definitely had left their mark on her. Her usually vibrant dark hair was more gray than red now. And there were new lines surrounding her eyes and mouth.

Those hazel eyes that are so much like her daughter’s stare at me, but there is blurriness to them that wasn’t there before. She takes me in, a frown etched between her brows.

Rebecca looks up at her mom before she gives me an apologetic smile. Stirring the bacon in the pan, she places it to the side and wipes her hands on the towel before going to her mom.

“Hey, I didn’t realize you were awake.” She places her hands on her mother’s shoulders. “C’mon, let’s get you se—”

Mrs. Williams shifts her attention from Rebecca to me onceagain. I start to think that this might be a bad idea and I should probably leave so I don’t upset her when her words make my heart stop.
