His brow quirks up. “Not even your ex?”

His words make me pause. Aaron lifts his hand, ordering another drink.

“What does Rebecca have to do with this?” I ask slowly, making sure to keep my expression neutral, not that Aaron is interested in looking at me.

“People have been talking about you two.”

My teeth grind together in irritation. “People need to find something better to do.”

“So you wouldn’t mind if she moved on?”

“Where is all this coming from?”

Instead of answering, Aaron turns around and tips his chin toward the dance floor. Annoyed with his cryptic comments, I turn around only to do a double-take.

Because Rebecca is there, dancing with some dude.

My jaw clenches, fingers tightening around the glass in my hand.

Aaron smirks. “No other reason, my ass.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

REBECCA

“So, how is Mr. Fernandez doing?”

Fernandez?

I look up from my glass to find Savannah watching me intently. “Miguel?”

How the hell does she know I saw Miguel? The only person who saw us together was Linda, and I didn’t think she would go around town talking about what she saw. Not like there was much to see, but still.

The corner of Savannah’s mouth tips upward in a knowing smirk. “I was asking aboutMiguel’sdad, but sure, we can talk about your ex. It is still ex, right?”

Shit, I walked right into that one.

“Mr. Fernandez is doing better. From what I’ve heard, they held him in the hospital for a few days to make sure he’s okay, but now he’s home, which is a relief. I should probably stop by their house one day to see if I can help in any way.”

“Heard?” Savannah quirks her brow, taking a sip from her beer. “As in fromMiguel?”

I kick her under the table with my foot. “Will you stop it already?”

Savannah laughs. “No way, you were the one who broughtit up.” Her phone buzzes on the table. She picks it up, her smile falling a little.

“What’s up with that face?” I ask, grateful for the change of subject.

“Mark.” She rolls her eyes. “He was supposed to come to Bluebonnet tomorrow, but apparently, something came up at work.”

I bite the inside of my cheek, trying to hold back my tongue.

Sav mutters something under her breath as she turns her phone face down and shifts her attention to me. “Again. There, I said it so you don’t have to.”

“That guy doesn’t deserve you.”

“He’s not that bad. Things are just different now that we’re trying to do the whole long-distance thing.” Sav tucks a strand of her hair behind her ear. “Anyway… Forget about Mark. I want to hear everything about Mr. Football Player. What else did you hear from him? Is he still here? I thought he was supposed to leave after the wedding?”

“He was, but considering everything that happened, he decided to stay.”
