She was working in Lonestars admin office as one of the people who took care of scheduling events and making sure the players got where they needed to be on time.

“Good afternoon, Miguel!”

I look up to find old Mrs. Timothy waving at me from her shop. Sliding the notification away to deal with it later, I lock my phone and lift my hand to wave back before continuing to Becky’s café. I tried texting her to see what she was up to before I left my parent’s place, but I have yet to hear from her.

Was the café that busy? I guess I could always sit around until she wraps up.

Looking through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I spot Rebecca standing behind the counter. My steps slow down as I drink her in. Her hair is down today, falling in loose waves around her face that I couldn’t wait to sink my hands into before I claim that stubborn mouth of hers. There was nothing like messing that woman up a little so everybody knew she was taken.

But is she really?

Rebecca was pretty clear about what she wanted. A secret hookup. Closure.

She was mine now. That was the only thing that mattered.

Placing my hand on the handle, I start to open the door, but it won’t budge. My brows pull together as I give the handle a little shake until my eyes fall on the sign hanging above the door.

Closed.

What the…

The motion on the other side of the window catches my attention, and I look up just in time to notice Rebecca’s surprised expression as she turns the key and pulls open the door.

“Miguel? What are you doing here?”

“My dad was sick of me nagging him, so he shooed me away. I figured I’d stop by, but then, the sign says it’s closed. Are you already done for today?”

“No, it’s just…”

Before she can finish, laughter spills from the back of the room. I look over her shoulder, but the café is empty.

“And then, when he finally snapped, it was everything. The way he grabbed her and pressed her against the door as he devoured her was just so swoony,” a woman’s voice declares from the back before letting out a loud sigh.

My brows raise as Becky presses her lips together, her cheeks turning pink.

“Care to explain that one?” I ask, finding this whole thing extremely amusing.

“Umm.” Becky tucks a strand of her hair behind her ear. “It’s a book club.”

My brows quirked up. “A book club, you say?”

“Yup, a book club.”

“I think I liked it better when he put her on the kitchencounter and got to his knees so he could show her just how a woman should be devoured,” another voice adds—a somewhat familiar voice. “This woman knows how to write a really good steamy scene. I even showed it to my husband, so he could reincarnate it, and let me tell you…”

It takes me a moment to place the voice, but once I do, I’m pretty sure my mouth hits the ground.

“Mom?” I move Becky to the side and follow the sound of the voices until I get to the more private back part of the store.

Two dozen heads turn in our direction as I enter the room. And sure enough, my mother is one of them.

“Miguel? What are you doing here?” Her smile falls almost immediately as she gets to her feet. “Is something wrong with your father?”

“No.” I shake my head. “Dad’s fine. He’s home with Gage.”

Mom visibly relaxes. “Oh, you gave me a scare there for a minute. I thought something happened.”

“No, just Dad being sick of me hovering over him. He said you’d be home soon.”
