But the longer he stares at me, the knot in my stomach grows tighter because I can see his mind working, and I know what’s coming even before he utters the words.

Or at least tries to.

“Come with—”

I lift my hand, pressing it against his mouth. His warm breath tickles the tips of my fingers.

“Don’t.”

Please don’t say it.

“What?” he asks, his lips brushing against myfingers.

“Don’t say it.” I move my hands to his cheeks, pressing my forehead against his.

“Don’t say what, Rebecca? That I’m falling in love with you all over again? That I’vebeenin love with you for as long as I can remember? That I can’t imagine my life without you?”

“Miguel…” My eyes fall shut, each of his words like a kick to my gut. “Don’t ask me to do something you know is impossible.”

“It doesn’t have to be impossible.” His palms slide over mine, our fingers intertwining. “We could…”

I shake my head. “Wecan’t.”

“We could find a way,” he insists.

The frustration rises inside of me. But I would rather deal with frustration than face the fact that my heart is breaking apart because I have to watch the man I love walk out of my life.

Again.

Because that’s what’s happening.

Despite everything I did to guard my heart, somewhere along the way, I’d fallen in love with Miguel Fernandez once again.

Or maybe I never actually stopped loving him to begin with.

“How?” I slide my hands from under his, pulling back. I needed some space. I needed to put some distance between us before he broke the neatly patched scars on my heart. “How exactly are we supposed to find a way? Your life is in Austin, and mine is here. I have a business here. A family. My mom is sick, Miguel. She needs more care every day that passes. Chase is good at playing pretend, but he’s not doing well. I can’t leave them, and for what?”

I can see the vein in his forehead twitch.

I’ve struck a nerve.

Good.

I wanted him to be angry. Just like I was angry at everything, but most importantly, at myself.

“For me. For us. Hell, you could ask me to stay! Tell me to stay.”

No, he couldn’t be asking that of me.

He couldn’t mean it.

But he meant it.

I could see it on his face.

He was serious.

If I said the word, he would stay.
